Going to look this week at older versions of the Nissan Terrano, Ford Maverick and Mitsubishi Shogun (all SWB).
Would really appreciate any good/bad points to look out for please? I want to tow one 16.2hh horse in a Richardson-type trailer.

Thanks!

I have a swb nissan terrano 51 plate 2.7 tdi, it is fine for towing my 16.3 and ifor 510 but is quite a light weight vehicle. Not sure there would be enough power there if you ever wanted to tow 2 horses.

I think the Shoguns look heavier so will check the spec for each and see....

Here are the good and bad points:

Shogun : excellent ride, powerful, can tow 2.8 tons. Downside is that its very thirsty and the mpg is not great!

Terrano : Cheap to run, parts available least thirsty and still able to tow aaround 2.8 tons

Maverick : Often cheap to buy, ride is quite good. However thirsty again (especially the petrol model).
Can tow the least amount 2 tons

If you are into cars buy the Shogun, if you want a good servant, buy the terrano.

I have a T reg Terrano that is just run in at 100k on the clock! It is the 2.7 diesal and brilliant. It is a real loyal servant and great puller of my Ifor 505 and heavey horse. Could not recommend them enough!

Thanks so much for the advice! I was wondering if the Shogun would be more thirsty on fuel...am looking at diesel models only and although I prefer the shogun for looks I do think the Terrano might work out to be more practical.
Thanks again!
