Have seen two yards I like and while I have an idea of which I prefer, I would like to know people's opinions on what they would choose. It will also be my first horse as well so could do with lots of support!

Yard A:

- Basically full livery, you groom, ride and prep haynets and feeds
- £240 a month and bedding and hay extra
- Indoor school (ideal for this weather!)
- 24/7 summer turnout, alright grazing and natural field shelters but barbed wire fencing!
- Competitions within hacking distance
- Great hacking
- Busy yards, mainly kids with mums
- YO not very friendly
- 30/40 min drive depending on traffic

Yard B

- £130 a month DIY with jobs
- Friendly YO who is happy to help and experienced liveries
- Quiet yard with four other liveries
- 24/7 summer turnout, post and rail fencing but not a lot of natural shelter
- Great hacking
- Outdoor school but lunging not permitted
- 15/20 min drive

Thanks!

I would go for option b if it's your first horse you will need a frendly supportive yard owner and experienced liveries to give you help when needed
Barbed wire fencing and horses are a accident waiting to happen personally wouldn't even consider a yard with this type of fencing

Hope this helps and good luck with your first horse

Option B sounds the better option, provided you have the time. Of course you may be able to share jobs with some of the other liveries, it you turn out their horse 2 days a week and they do yours 2 days a week as an example. Whichever way you look at it, your're going to be spending a lot of time there and it is important that you are happy with the people around you, as well as having the best for your horse. As if you aren't happy with the other people, including the YO you will be stressed and this will transmit to your horse.

Wish I was in a position to have a horse again, but work commitments and non-horsey husband are conducive at the moment. Hopefully when we move (in the next couple of years) things will be a little easier and I can persuade him that he would be better off with me having a horse, rather than being under his feet all day. - Just got to make him think it was his idea in the first place.

Thanks guys! As much as I like the facilities at the first yard, I was worried about the barbed wire fencing! My instinct is to go with option B and the YO took lots of time to chat to me, ask me about my potential horses and really explain everything about the yard.

Thanks again for your thoughts! X

I think if you've got the time for DIY with your first horse then you're definitely going to want to be doing everything :p A good support network would also be ideal. If you find you want better facilities in a year or so once you know how you and your horse like your routine then you could move to something more suitable, but equally you might find that you can give up the facilities to have a great yard.

B for me too.

Any yard with barbed wire fencing is a disgrace IMO, and others have said - accident waiting to happen! Also, go with a friendly YO as makes a world of difference.

defo B, if the yo on A is not friendly now when she wants your business what is she going to like when shes got you also in the driving time you will be saving you can easily muck out!!
Pics of new horse please

Having seen barbed wire injuries on several horses, all of which had deep irregular and difficult to manage injuries With one needing numerous skin grafts,i would say stay well away from any yard with barbed wire.
