Opinions over mane length

Your horse, your rules. I personally like Jazz's shorter because it looks better (on him) that way, but I'd never dream of telling anyone else what to do with theirs!

Aren't we horsey people an opiniated lot! My horse has a pulled mane and tail. My horse, my preference. Whatever someone else chooses to with their horse is their business!

So recently I have been getting told that I should pull my horses mane as it's too long apparently. It's maybe about 5-6 inches long on one side and 3-4 on the other (it refuses to all stay on one side).

I don't see the big deal. He isn't going to any competitions any time soon so what's the problem? I quite like it long anyway haha. Plus someone tried pulling it a while ago (without my permission I asked them to clip my horse and they tried that too so I wasn't happy) but my horse made it very clear he didn't want that done.

Anyone really picky over manes/tails? I just don't care not when it's not necessary to keep him looking smart. A lot of effort for nothing to me.

:) your horse so do as you wish, it is none of their business. I always work hard to keep my horses manes and tails very, very long as that is what I like, the only horse I kept that had a short mane was our TB, as I liked him in hunter plaits, I also keep my Shetland's mane hogged, but that's because he suffers terribly with sweet-itch.

Whatever you are going for with a mane, tail and forelock is up to you, I really don't like it when other people try to force their ways onto you, I find it very rude :frown3:

It up to you how you keep your horse however like people some horses suit long or short hair better than others. I shared a SF whose owner decided he wanted to grow his mane out ( he liked the look of iberian horses) . The mane was thin and lank and made a neck that could have looked long and elegant look weak and almost ewe necked.

My retired tb I leave his mane as it provides protection against flies and rain, he has quite a muscled arched neck so it looks OK. My ridden one is pulled and kept neat and when it gets too long just doesn't do him any favours.

Mine had a long mane, mainly because he hates having anything done with it. However, I got sick of it tangling in the reins when he was being a kn*b and so hacked it off with scissors and then tidied it up with rake. Its texture is akin to wire wool and it separates all the way up his neck.

As he is also still learning about the clippers, he is currently sporting a minimal wobbly clip with his back feathers off and fronts still on. He doesn't care and I really don't give a monkey's either as we are not likely to be going anywhere this side of summer coat appearing.

Because he is such a wuss, achieving any kind of decent turn out takes hours and I'd rather be riding:)

Do what you want. My Dutch Warmblood has a mane to rival a Spanish Horse. All because she doesn't compete and I simply cannot be bothered to pull it. Her tail is nearly on the floor. Once it reaches the floor I will cut it to just below her hocks in its yearly trim :D

you do what YOU like to see :)

i like the long thick but straight edge pudding bowl look lol! and love the big fat gold ball dutch/stallion/whatever you want to call them....style plaits it produces.

if anyone pulled my horses mane without asking they would be pulling their teeth out their nose! how incredibly rude!

For me , the longer the better !!

wow beautiful def something to say when a long mane blowing in the wind when horse is galloping round.

My boys tail once was 8 ft 2 long - I was trying to beat the world record of 12ft but that is as far as I got his mums was 7 ft 8. Now it is touching the ground and when clean looks great

does he have it down all the time? I hate to see them treading our their tails, it must hurt (I have very long hair so maybe being anthropomorphic!). I let my tails grow quite long in the summer (but not so long they tread them out) but trim them in the winter-just enough to stop muddy and icy dreads.

For me it's about the individual horse. I pull (or rather solo comb) both of mine's manes but to different lengths. A's mane stick up like a Mohican if you pull it too short so he wears his slightly longer, which also helps to even out his very thick neck. M's long and puny neck looks a lot better with a short mane so I pull his shorter. I'm not that great at keeping on top of them though so I suddenly look at them one day and realise they've got too long. Once I know that I have to do them there and then! My old boy was a Section D so I would leave his au naturel until he developed sweet itch and I had to hog it all off every summer. It would just grow back to level where it was starting to look good and I'd have to take it all off again. Luckily his showing days were over by then.

Nobody's opinion but yours matters so you do whatever the hell you like.

I have long hair too - and love to see long flowing manes and tails. His tail touches the ground at the moment ..................

If you keep your horse with a long mane and tail it's usually kept plaited, so manes are out of the way when you're riding and so they can't step on them, same with a tail and a tail bag is always used.

these are the techniques I follow:

i am just pulling my andalucians mane, i haven't touched her forelock though, but the mane is still way to thick to plait - havent a clue what i am going to do- was debating chopping of some from the underside - though i have never tried this before

yeah, OK-still don't really see the point of tail on the ground and wouldnt want horses living out in the Southern Uplands with a tail bag on but hey ho. My lot have tails at fetlock length-bit shorter in the winter.
