OK so still looking for my next horse……phoned up this afternoon to enquire about one that I saw advertised, had a good chat with the seller, horse sounds nice and the sort of thing I am looking for, so arranged to see it next week. Within about half an hour of the phone conversation I get a text from the seller saying that if I wanted to have the horse at my yard for a months trial that would be fine.

So I haven’t seen the horse yet, haven’t tried it, don’t know if it is what I am looking for, and the seller doesn’t know me from Adam……..Am I the only one that finds this strange...…just strikes me as being desperate to get rid of………….thoughts please!

Yes you are!! I think that is a very kind/rare gesture now a days. Surely if she was desperate to get rid she would not offer you a trial! I am sure she meant you could have a trial once she has met you/seen you ride? However after reading other posts recently it does seem like people are struggling to sell atm. I am selling my mare and there is no way I would offer a trial as my friend did this and the horse came back with an awful injury- maybe it could have been prevented with a contact or something but it put me off! However I am intent on matching my horse to the right buyer and want a really nice home so I don't think a trial is really necessary if everyone is honest :)

Perhaps the seller meant a LWVTB as a general principal just so you know about possibilities. If she made the offer on the basis of you sounding nice on the phone, then perhaps she is naive. Maybe she just wanted to reassure you, and any other potential buyers that she is genuine and has nothing to hide.

Yes you are being a bit, i have lovely person i have chatted to loads and only finally met for the first time last weekend, and have offered she can take my horse for a months trial.
Not everyone is trying to stich you up, trust is a good thing and maybe the woman really liked you and wants the horse to have a good home and thinks you are the person to give the horse that

Thank you wise people!! I have had such a nightmare with one doped horse, 3 failed vettings, travelling miles to see horses that are not as advertised, being told lies by the seller etc etc that now I am really cautious.

I was amazed to receive the text as we had not discussed anything about trials and initially thought that this was a fantastic offer but then the little voice in my head started questioning……will batter the voice back down and take the offer of a trial (providing all goes well next week) as a fantastic opportunity to really make sure that she is the one for me and vice versa.:)

Thank you.

I suspect that during your conversation with the seller, perhaps you told her about the problems you've had so far with horses not being what they should have been and she knows her horse is genuine, and maybe liked the sound of you too, so took a chance to prove he is what she says!

That's my take on it anyway :)

I'd do that with most of my rehomers, if they are what you have said they are it means you find the right horse for the right owner with less risk of them being unsuitable. I sold one last week, that when they collected I said i'd keep the envelope they paid with for a week and would give a full refund if not what they wanted. Needless to say, horse was as described and they are keeping him.
Trying a horse out at the seller's convenience and premises don't tell you the whole story about the horse. If you've had a good chat, the seller has been honest and you 'hit it off' if that's the right words, then why not offer to let the horse sell himself?
Yes, people can be desperate to sell. But if the horse was a bar steward you'd take it back anyway so what would be the point? Sometimes, especially in the plainer, boring types, a horse doesn't actually look as good as he is. Beauty is as beauty does, but people would rather buy beautiful regardless of the type of horse!

Yes I think you are. Apart from anything else a month's trial would reveal all sorts of problems with the horse that a dishonest seller would want to hide, so I can't see what a dishonest seller would have to gain from it.

Things that sellers say that should make anyone worry are: "No need to vet him, he's never had a problem", "You need to buy him NOW as I have 3 other people waiting", etc.

If she's offering you the trail and you do like the horse, then take it. If i was looking for a horse and someone offered me a trail i'd defo take as not many people do now

I think I'd have to disagree with everyone else, and say no, you're not being too suspicious - I would be too.

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't go & check the horse out, and if you can get a month's trial, that's fantastic...

agree with the others, maybe at some point in the conversation you mentioned that you had problems before, you came across as honest and decent to the owner so she is prepared to let you trial the horse so that you can be sure you are getting what you paid for. obviously that would depend on how things go when you meet i presume.

not many people will do a trial these days so when you are offered one take it (if the horse is suitable when you go see it.). i would possibly offer a trial for mine as well but that would depend on who it was and where the pony would go.
