Went to try a horse with my friend today, she is after a nice alround schoolmaster type, that is a little more athletic than her last horse was. This is the first one she has tried, and she rode her really nicely. I then got on and jumped her (Yes, I know, not supposed to be jumping, but it felt so good!!!) She is a pink papered hanovarian mare, dressage trained, but jumps like a pro, done newcomers, and pre novice eventing. They ride her in a pelham but she will school and do flatwork in a snaffle, wasnt at all strong into her jumps.

Didnt get any pics of her on, but she was a bit more with it and got some of me

(please no comments about my awful jumping position, this is the first time jumping since breaking my leg!)

And a video of us jumping....

Comments and opinions please

She looks a super sort, bit weak across the backend and I'd insist on trying her in a snaffle before buying but it sounds like she'll do the job well

My thoughts exactly. Sounds ideal to be honest and what a fab attitude to life and work too.

whispers......dont like her bum at all nor the fact she swishes her tail while working! The tail bit could indicate a bloody minded mare-was she in season? How old is she? Not for me but that doesnt mean a thing

Ive just managed to see the photos of her jumping. Has she got back problems? She seems to be jumping flat and is dangling like a good un! Shes got a nice head !

. Sorry, I would leave well alone

I like her alot actually. Conformation only; she has a great shoulder and chest, well set on neck with good length and a nice head. Yes, she's a little weak behind, many mare's are, I don't, however, think she is 'weak backed'. The fact she is weak behind would, perhaps, concern me if she was fully competition fit. I expect with more work (I suspect she's not in full competition work?) her hindquarters will improve in shape. She is a little over at the knee in the first pic, but again, this wouldn't worry me in a low level competition horse. Just my opinion but she sounds and looks fab for what your friend wants. As long as her attitude and temperament is to match, plus a passed full vetting, looks like a winner.

She looks like a really nice person, good attitude to her jump etc. However, she is quite heavily on the forehand in the pictures. She has quite a substantial front end, and looks weak behind (which is the 'engine' I guess). Because she's so dark, it's hard to see if this would be improved by correct muscle building or not.
Sweet person though, which is sometimes more important than conformation.

Shilasdair, I see where you're coming from.. But I'm going to disagree slightly, mainly because I know you won't be offended!

I think she's slightly on the forehand in one picture, but she's not built downhill and the fact she is on the forehand could be due to any number of factors not related to conformation (rider, training etc...) Therefore I'd suggest with correct work she'll work in a better outline, as seen in the other pics.

Paces arent anything special (from what is shown) but if she is honest and capable, and does what your friend wants her to do, then go for it.
But definitly go back, ride her first, and in a snaffle, and maybe get her trainer to go with her!
You say the horse is "dressage trained", what level is she competed to?

I'm sorry but I'm not keen about her. Although her attitude is great the severe lack of top line and muscle really worries me. Her back bone is prominent . This is worrying in an mature horse especially for a horse that has done a fair bit of work like she has.. She has massives of bone and big feet so overall she really should be looking far chunkier over her back and especially her hindquarter- that is a teeny back end. This would strongly suggest back problems or some sort of issue somewhere. A horse that is physically correct will always never have a prominent backbone even at field rest. ( this is what I was told by one of the leading vets in the country and I would agree with him).
Look at Jerry, and how quickly he muscled up with just a little work. The same would be for any other horse that is problem free.

How dare you Shaab

I didn't think she was 'built downhill' - almost the opposite, that she has a deep girth, and quite powerful front end, but a weaker looking back end...
The saddle seemed to sit quite far forward...tipping the rider forward a little too...so that's curable.
It sounds as if both madhector and her friend really felt a strong liking for this mare...and if I were them I'd go with it...but get it vetted

I think a willing horse with some faults is easier than an unhelpful, perfectly conformed one anyway.

PS If you ever disagree with me again...I'll send my herd of heavies round....Shire x heavies....

I REALLY like her!

She is stunning, looks to have a lovely temperment and moves beautifully.

sounds like a good step up from your friends cob, a bit more athletic but not silly and fizzy.
