Hi all, just after some opinions on the new horse, had him in Feb looking under developed, abit skinny and very wild:rolleyes:, im trying to get him chunky and well developed. Any ideas on how long this is going to take, I understand its a long road!!

ETA hes 6 KWPN, worked 6days aweek hacking, schooling, lessons, lunge, hes out currently 24/7 has some chaff, spillers pony cubes, calmer, garlic and oil hes a very fussy eater and eats like a sparrow  also has hay when he comes in to be ridden.

This photo is in March a few weeks after we had him:

All advice and criticism taken on board. thanks

I wouldn't be wanting any more weight on him - he looks perfect to me.
Muscle wise - some lunge work with a pessoa on longest setting would help improve his top line :)

He's looking lovely! One thing that may help, have you considered changing the chaff to a conditioning feed? I too use Spillers and feed my 20 year old the conditioning fibre and he seems to be thriving on it! Maybe with all the work he's doing, he needs to have his feed changed. Good luck :)

I would dispose of those hidious hanging mangers and feed off the floor, looks to me as though he has a bit of muscle on the underside of his neck that need buliding on the top ;) could replace the nuts with a balancer as I agree, doesnt need more weight just allround muscle now. I think he looks very well, well done to you :)

I don't think he looked skinny to begin with - he looks in fine bloom now but wouldn't want more weight on him at all! Handsome horse!

He cant have buckets on the floor he refuses to eat! Have tried several times he kicks it all over the place and wont eat it!! Bl**dy horse!! I wanted to try him on the spillers cool fibre but cant seem to get hold of it, im very vary of what i feed him as he is so loopy and spooky to ride.
Maggie, Hes bred by Chico's boy!:)

He's very handsome, likewise I wouldn't want any more weight on him, just keep him the way he is, he looks like a lean type.

I'd like to event him, but hes not proving very brave at the moment, whether that will change given time, his shire did very well in sj and dresasge, he has beautiful paces so will do well in either if he does turn out to be a complete wimp! :)

I agree he looks perfect weight just now. I use Baileys topline cubes, they're good for putting on condition and muscling up. You could also try adding some oil to his feed or a chaff that has oil added?

Well done you though!

X

He's looking fit and well - nigh on perfect I'd say.

Take the garlic out of his food and he'll probably eat up better.

He looked good when you got him. I wouldn't want more weight on him. Correct schooling will help with building top line.

I know what you mean about not being brave. One of my warmbloods has a super jump but is just too chicken to xc reliably so he is now a dressage horse scoring well at medium. Unfortunately if they aren't brave there is not a lot you can do about it.

He does get linseed oil in his feed, topline cubes.. do they make them hyper? I was thinking maybe baileys calm and condition? How long before i should really start noticing a change? I want his back end to be rounder and to improve his topline, id like to use a perosa but hes not the best on the lunge he does the odd buck/spook.

As lots of others have said, he is certainly well-covered now :-)

Maybe not eating in a floor-level bucket is telling you something... he isn't that hungry any more!

Have fun with him.

He only gets a handful of cubes and chaff just to get his calmer in mainly and he never licks the bowl so he probably isnt hungry but just a token after hes worked and get the magical calmer into him

Re Topline cubes - no they're not heating so if you want some oomph you'll need to also use some oats / competition mix. I feed Topline cubes all year round and find they are good for supplementing schooling in order to build topline (and general toning). I do give my boys more over winter though. I think Baileys also do a Topline mix now which presumably is just the same but more palatable, although its a bit more expensive.

I know you cant teach them to be bold but you can show them lots of things and get them to trust you. Never say never! There might be an eventer in there just waiting to get out!

Thanks Sauchentree_lady I will look into them i deff do not want any more heating or oomph as hes already on a calmer!! I must admit im not brilliant when it comes to knowledge on feed! So will this help get him in top condition in a quicker time?
