Opinions please - plaiting for dressage

I will ask the judge who told me not to plait again next week - she is list 1 so should know what she's talking about.... she did say to me once that the thing that upsets most judges is not smiling when you see them for the first time (i.e. down the centre line at lower levels) and incorrect saluting - the stories she has of some bizarre salutes people do!!

I feel that if you have a native then providing it looks tidy then feathers and mane should be left unplaited. However if it has a pulled mane or mane that looks bit of mess then it should be plaited.
If it is not a native then i think horses should be plaited. Whenever you go out to compete you should make an effort to look smart regardless of what discipline, so IMO dressage competitions horses should be plaited and at least the dressage phase for eventing and SJ unplaited but should still look respectible.
If the judges can be bothered to turn up and judge then you should be bothered to turn up and make an effort in appearance.

I had a connie a few years back and he did rather well at dressage. He was trimmed pulled and then plaited up. Very hard to do though as the main is so thick, I had to sew them in and even then I had to become very good at it to make him look the part. Plaited his tail as well, but he turned so many heads as with his main out the way you could see he was truely working.
A running plait could work but if it is over tight it can make the neck look tense and they look like sh*t if they go all loose and lumpy.
I know this has been of no help, but if we saw a picture of the horse it would be easier to decide as I think the look and build of it would play a big part in this choice.

I'm not much of a dressage person but I think if you want to show your horse in native classes aswell, you can't really cut all his hair off can you, so the judge is going to have to like it or lump it!!

I'm sure if you were both looking really smart then a reputable judge wouldn't be bothered if he had feather and a wasn't plaited, and if they were then they wouldn't be a true dressage judge, because that isn't what it's all about!

It shouldnt make any difference if you plait or not, the only disadvantage to not plaiting is the judge cant really see the muscles in the neck. Just make sure he is clean and tidy.

Little_Mare - whereabouts do you compete if you dont mind me asking?

Hi

He will not be judged as a connemara in dressage, he will be judged against the criteria of the test and the level. Plaits always look the smartest and will show off his neck too.

Personally I would always plait the mane and forelock for dressage. But if you are competing at a lower level say prelim or novice then it is ok to leave him natural but as smart as possible.

Have fun!
