I have had a sharer for some time now. She is great with the girls and a real help if I'm ever ill/away/working late, plus she is good company.

She's 15 and too tall for my little horses now. I have been looking at ways to take on a bigger horse for her. Her mom will pay a fixed contribution like she did when sharer was short enough to ride mine regularly and for the shoes. Sharer is also doing a GCSE in horse riding so it is quite important.

I have been offered my housemates horse on loan for her. My housemate is selling up and happy for me to have the mare, the horse is:
ISH approx 13/14y/o 16hh, lovely nature, a little sharp out but safe, would bsja and very easy to do, BUT it is a bit bossy in the field and my old housemate will probably want to sell eventually meaning we will then have to part with her. I think she will bring all her tack etc.

PROBLEM

we have been looking for stabling/field, The other horse we've been offered belongs to a friend of the y/o and could join my old mare there. It would be insured and vaccinated for us.

The only other option I can cope with alongside work is the livery yard next door where the spotties will (hopefully) be going come spring. But this is more expensive, the rent alone will eat up all of my sharers mom's contribution to say nothing of worming, feed, hay, bedding etc. I also don't expect that the mare will be insured and vaccinated at no cost to us. But my old housemate was like a sister to me and I would like to help her out, I'm not sure she will ever be quite ready to sell this mare!

It seems a bit ridiculous to look for a sharer for a horse for my sharer!! but I can't think of any other options and horse's owner is ok with it. The problem with that is if the secondary sharer lets us down we're stuck and I don't want to take a horse on on that basis.

I have struggled to find anywhere else nearby. Any ideas?? The ideal would be this mare with my old mare at my present yard and the spotties at home but I don't think Y/O will have a different horse there.

Sorry long and confused post but I need to make some decisions before I string anyone along.

Do you need another horse though? It sounds very much like it is only because of your sharer that you are getting another horse and that it would be a real struggle for you to have another one. As the sharer is 15 and doing GCSE's it is plausible that in a couple of years she will be off to uni or something and you will have no sharer and another horse and no way of covering costs etc.

Could you not ask the potential loan horse's owner to pay for, for example, insurance and vaccinations or something? I mean, she is getting to keep her horse without incurring any of the costs.

You do sound very lovely to be finding a horse for your sharer, although the situation sounds pretty tricky to navigate to me.

good luck with it all!

Thanks.

The uni thing is partly why we are looking loan not to buy something cheap bring on and sell, which would be my preference.

The horse is fab and would be easy to sell if we couldn't keep it, also would only be stuck for a month's notice, hence loan preferable.

Owner not too keen to insure but horse vaccinated last month, again not too keen to commit to pay for next one, also worryingly now tells me it will remain for sale, feeling a little as though we will keep it in work then have it taken away.

Y/O quite keen on the idea as will get to hack it out with her partner.

Going to see it at weekend as not seen it for 11 months. Will discuss details and update! Owner has been mate for 10+ years (depending how much we are knocking off our ages!) and will be straight with me so no problems there.
