Opinions please.

I currently have a normal flysheet on my horse during the day and change it for a turnout at night. The midges have a field day on his man parts so I smother the area in sudocream.

I've just bought him a BugBuster flysheet. To get maximum benefit from it he should wear it at dawn and dusk but I am not around then to change his rug so what I am wondering is would there be any harm in putting the turnout on over the bugbuster?

My horse wears the following:

Day time (inside)
Pyjamas (boett type rug)
Maxi Flow shires fly rug

Night time (turned out)
The above with a 200g rug on top

When it drops below 14oC he will wear a fleece over the top during the day and night .

So yes its 4 rugs, but he has really bad sweet itch, so better to boil him so he can stand to wear the 2 rugs in 30oc heat (although chance would be a fine thing apart from the 2 weeks in june!)

I do it too so dont worry about it, the fly sheets are very fine anyway so it does no harm

Have u tired the Rambo sweetitch hoody? It's quite thick, and you may not need to change it.You can also buy waterproof liner, whihc you can on underneath the hoody if you think it may rain.Had mine 2 years,a dn they're still going strong, well worthwhile the investment.
How about this to protect his " man parts"? haven't tried it, just use cream, but its an interesting idea!!

I regularly leave horse in fly rug with fleece overnight when stables as it saves me time when I turn out in the morning, ie. only have to whip the fleece off instead of putting on the fly rug with all its fiddley straps etc!

short answer - yes, it'll be fine

I always put his turnout on over his flysheet - I think most people do so I wouldn't worry about it!

I heard it's supposed to be like an Indian summer for a while so keep expecting more midges and flies - ugh!!

The only rug that has helped my mare this year is the boett type of rug. My mare gets bitten in the same area but sudocream seems to stop them taking hold. This is the only rug that covers the stomach fully as last year I could not ride due to her being bitten so bad under her stomach.

Its expensive and there are cheaper models but think about the amount of hay you would need to feed if they were in and the rug pays for itself. There is a cheaper version than the boett have not tried it but worth a look.

I thought the fly sheet was just designed for summer when you want to keep flies off but not get horse hot. I dont think flies can get under a turnout rug any more than a fly sheet so if you need a heavier rug, you can leave the flysheet off.
But having read answers on here, seems people do either, so I guess just trust your instincts? xxx

Its not to stop flies but to stop the midges, the bug buster sheets are impregnated with insect repellent so stop them attacking the underparts.

Have been rugging over the top all week and its working very well

I put a rainsheet on over the Rambo Hoodie when it starts to get chilly at night (round about now) or if it's pouring (most of August!). So he still has total anti-midge coverage but is also dry where it matters.
