Hello,Hello what's this all about then?

Friend noticed a bay in a field with a coloured, the bay has a stable rug on, so she asked about and found out it had been in the field since Friday, has no idea who owns the land or horses so thought she would report as stable rug it would be wet & heavy and the horse would get cold. You can guess the rest (see option 3!!!).

poor horse, be inteferring and take the rug off, it will be soaking heavy and the horse be better without it, rspca rubbish, apparantly ilph better at responding

Could you get it a cheap turnout rug and swap it over? - horse would be comfy and hopefully the owners might not notice different rug so no grief for you.

It's thought to be a Rambo Jumbo Stable Wug (high neck, think filling, dark blue/black outer with red binding). Thus will be water resistant, but not water proof.

I'm 99.999999999999999% sure Rambo have never made a turnout in dark blue/black with red binding.

My ex 'friend' used to turn her horses out in stable rugs, lazy cow. One day a horse rolled and the rug got wrapped round him and he ripped it to shreds trying to escape, poor thing how he didn't injure himself I'll never know

have you been to see this yourself??

Not yet.

they do this turnout in those colours.

maybe your friend would do better getting FACTS (as opposed to assumptions) before ringing the rspca?

Ummmmm she did, she checked it on the Rambo website (but was already 99% sure the rug was a Rambo Jumbo Stable Wug) and from the description she gave me that is exactly what the rug is. The rug is fairly distinctive given it has the 'V' fastening at the front and a high neck!!!

Perhaps you should get your fact right (and read OP carefully) before making assumptions and posting!!!

What exactly would you do??? Ignore a horse left out 24/7 in torrential rain in a stable rug??? I appreciate (as my friend also does) that it's not live threatening, but it can't be comfortable either. Unfortunately it seems the inspector is clueless regarding rugs.

You thought Rambo had never made a turnout rug in dark blue / black with red binding, and took that as meaning the rug WAS a stable rug.

When in fact Rambo DO make a turnout rug in those colours. Maybe not in that style this season but maybe in the past?

No, I would NOT leave a horse in a sopping wet stable rug in the field, but I WOULD make damn sure I was 100% (as opposed to 99.9999999...%) correct before phoning the rspca.

i see your dilemma - go and look yourself and go from there - it may be better just to put a cheap turnout ruig over the top worse case scenario..

I would get back on to the RSPCA and tell them that their response was not appropriate - and next time could they possibly send someone out who knew something about horses, and the type of rugs they wear.

I would then contact the ILPH.

In previous experiences with the RSPCA they are not worth a phone call. ILPH or another one like that are far better. Are there any local charities who would deal with it??

I wouldnt call the RS or IL but would check it out myself. If it is as your friend says, I would take the rug off and leave a note for the owner while I attempted to find him/her. Dont expect to be thanked for your 'interference'. M.

A few years ago some new people moved in locally and within weeks bought a pony
frown.gif
This was turned out in a stable rug in awful weather, their immediate neighbour mentioned this to them after couple of days and they had no idea, but in all fairness immediately went out and bought a turnout rug. Perhaps your friend could try and find the owners and give them a bit of advice, might be all they need! Otherwise I think I would remove the rug.

You don't know - they could have waterproofed the rug...if it is a 'rip resistant' material, with a dense weave, it can be done.
Unless the horse is cold, I'd probably leave it.

Forgot to say, I've had dark blue Rambo turnouts in the past with red bindings, like your photo....they did them with a normal lining, and also with a sort of grey fleece lining.

i've got blue with red trimming rambo turn out rugs from a few years ago
middle weight ones they are

and they are good at being waterproof too

Right I have gone to check for myself and from a visual check (no I am not about to trespass on someone else's land without permission and poke a round their horses), the rug IS a Rambo Jumbo Stable Rug. I have suggested my friend attaches a polite note to the gate for the owner stating that the horse would be better off with either no rug or with waterproof turnout rug on than a water resistant stable rug (unless said rug has been waterproofed somehow

), I would have done so, but had nothing waterproof to put a note in in my car and the paper would have turned to mush as it was peeing down at the time.
