Right, Ive been cantering now for a while, Last week popped over a jump. My gloves split so I didnt wear them for the lesson. All saddles there have a strap to hold on.I was holding on and got lots of blisters. The next time I have a lesson, Do you think I should wear my gloves and hold on, OR
borrow a body protector, and not hold on?

get new gloves, but dont get the cheap pimply ones, get some nice ones that cost about a tenner.
I bought my gloves about 3 years ago and they are fab no splits or anything! will try to find out what they are called. I think i bought them at TC Feeds

Hi Brontie, new gloves, definitely (I can't ride without gloves) and probably you should have a bp on if you are jumping. Also, don't forget that the strap is to stop the rider yanking the pony in the mouth as well as to help keep them on board

(not that you would of course

) so it's important to use it.

new gloves and a body protector...what begs to mind however was how tight you were holding on..to actually get blisters on your hands....

i have to admit to holding the reins physically too tight and ending up with cramp in my hands but have never had blisters...

Allij if i dont ride in gloves i automatically ge blisters... i dont hold the rein too tight ... prob not tight enough hence the blisters. If youre used to riding in gloves you will prob have nice soft fingers so easier to get blisters!!!

Id go for BP and new gloves. But just coz you have a BP on it wont make you invincible so id still slip a finger through the strap when jumping, until you are a little more secure.

Sounds like you are getting on quickly! well done!

Thanks everyone! Twas only a TINY jump, Im not brave enough for anything else, Didnt need to change position or anything, did it in trot and didnt feel a thing

Why is your instructor teaching you to jump holding onto the strap on the saddle? this will make you stay upright, you should have a neckstrap or hold the mane to keep you forward
