Just wanting your opinions on this
there is an ex jockey on the yard who does transport he is very well off
his transport business isnt doing very well bt he does it for a bit of extra cash
Me and a friend asked how much it would be to go to a local show about 10-15 mins away
he wanted £35 each from us
we think it is a bit much we can understand fuel prices have gone up and it is expensive to run a box but surely raising the prices for us because he isnt doing very well isnt very fair

i know £35 each doesnt seem much but its alot for me and there are no other people to share the costs with

Thats expensive compared to prices around here - our transporters charged my friends (4 of them) £65 each to go from Halesowen to Burnham on Sea, stayed with them for 4 hours and then drove them back.

Hes taking us to a show at the beginning of next month - hes charging £20 each to take them about half an hours journey away and pick them up again
 
I'd say £35 was more than reasonable.

I was paying that a few years ago - and would expect to pay around £50 to be honest.
 
I'd expect to pay about £60 for a 5-6 mile journey round here with an experienced transporter. Is he DEFRA approved? Would it just be £35 if one of you wanted to go? If so I think he's working his prices out in an odd fashion....
 
Thats less than the minimum you would pay around here, most have a minimum charge of £100 as its essentially a day of their time, even if only a short distance away, as they will have to either wait for you or come back and collect you, so can't accept any other work that day.
 
Its £1 a mile round here last time I checked - but that is for a one way pick up and drop off, no waiting around or going back....plus most of the local ones here have a minimum.
Could you doa self drive hire? If not you, one of your parents/friends?
 
That's a very fair price TBH.
What's he to do when you get there? He's either got to stay which means he is stuck there and can't do anything else so he needs paying for his time or he leaves you there, returns home until you're finished then comes to collect you and take you home which is 4 journeys instead of just 2 so a higher fuel cost. The latter also means he can't take another job on if it is going to interfere with your collection so he is stuck. Either way, he needs paying for his time you can't expect him to sit there twiddling his thumbs for nothing.
 
I think it's a fair price to be honest. If he's dropping you off an picking you up again later, I don't see how it would be worth his while any cheaper.

I think you'd be better off with self hire.

Re £1 a mile - there surely is noone daft enough to charge £10 to turn up, collect a horse, and drive it 10 miles somewhere??? For a tenner? If there are they can't be doing very well! I can't believe anyone would do it that cheap.....

Jumpthemoon - the ones I know of charge £1 a mile but as I said above have a minimum charge of about £80 usually!

Think that the hacking there idea is a much better one!

So if you wanted them to take your horse 5 miles down the road it would cost you £5? Or is there a minimum? Does the mileage include their actual mileage (ie they have to get from a-b-a and horse is actually going from a-b, so mileage would be a-b-a)?
