Hi I’m at diy yard and our stables are outside ones. In my bit there’s two buildings consisting of two stable and storage each. There’s three horses including mine. My building is in decent condition but the other is not quite safe therefore maintenance work will be going on next month. Yo moving two liveries to the other part of the farm so scaffolding can go up and roof can be torn and replaced. I asked if mine horse would be moved but he said no. I said he will be on his own(we are on night turnout) all day whilst he’s in with workers up banging making noise ect. He’s older ulcer prone boy and I don’t want to add him more stress so I’m not quite happy. There’s a space for us to move but yo evidently said no. He isn’t horsey so he doesn’t understand the problem. How can I explain to him my horses problem and my anxiety regarding him being on his own with lots of noise? I can’t have him living out because rest of the herd comes in so he would be on his own and he’s a good doer wearing muzzle so I want to give him a break during the day from wearing it.

I had this once. It’s really difficult with non horsey yard owners. Can you arrange to be there first day and see how he copes? If it’s his usual stable usual routine extra hay and some carrots as a treat he may surprise you. Alternatively arrange to be there and ask yard owner to come and see how unhappy your boy is then he is being unreasonable if there’s space elsewhere. Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you for your replies, suggestions and reassurance. Unfortunately my yo is very clueless and if he’s got anything in his head it’s quite hard to convince him otherwise. I haven’t been having a good time recently at the yard. he does favours some liveries and they can get away with murder or gets special privileges others can only wish for, I booked arena hire recently and my trailer was blocked with tractor with no one around to move it so I lost hire money, people don’t helping poo pick the fields I seemed to be reminded by him even though I poo pick regularly(herd turnout) but others getting away with not doing their share now stable situation. It’s quite daunting as we recently treated ulcers and he well knows it how much stress and money that costed me. I think it’s time to move out and move on.

I would be looking for another yard

Why do you stay?
Because it’s not easy to get up and move. To find good diy livery in my area is like neddle in a haystack. Places around me are known to me or I know people that livery there so I know what yards are. There’s only couple of yards near I would move to in a heartbeat but both have waiting lists I’m on.

This is what I might have to do but I need to speak to people as everyone is out at night and in during the day so he would be on his own again. No win! We figure something out x
Sounds like a horrid situation, I have much sympathy.

Some ideas

Do you know anyone whose horse is on day turnout who might let you use their stable for a few days in the day time?
Swapping your horse to day turnout and persuading one of his companions to also swap around
Putting your horse out 24-7 for a week and persuading one of his friends to do the same.
Approaching your yard owner and saying you've spoken to your vet, and your horse is at high risk of ulcer re-occurance if he is stressed, and being out of sight of friends whilst building work is going on, is likely to cause significant stress. And your vet's recommendation is that your horse is stabled with friends near by and away from stress of building work. Or turned out instead. And that vet is quite happy to speak to yard owner directly, if that is helpful. (I'd only speak to vet afterwards if yard owner did want to speak to them, as it is so obvious vet would suggest moving to with friends away from building work).

Agree with your conclusion above if yard owner, and other liveries really wont help you and your horse, it is sadly time to move.

With any luck it will be a short job with it only being a stable and not go on for too long? Perhaps you could go out on a long hack / in hard work while they do the worst of it or a paddock you could put him in temporarily? Sometimes repetition is necessary with clueless people. get more details ie how long what sort of machinery if any amount of noise? I think turning out while the work is going on would be an easy win if possible
