Opinions - Welshie to show or not to show

What sort of showing did you plan on doing with him? He looks a nice sort, although one thing which I thought when I saw the picture of him being ridden was that he looked quite 'bosomy' as though his legs were quite far underneath him. He has a nice head and eye, but I'm no section d showing expert- I'm sure there are lots more people who can give you better advice. Overall though he looks nice.

Local yes definitly!

County, I'm no Welsh Expert, but I'd say no ridden, but if he jumps why not have a go at the workers? His jump looks good!

I would deffently show him at local level in Mountian and Mooreland classes. If he likes jumping aswell then you cod do Working Cob/Hunter too.

He looks lovely btw :)

He looks a lovely sort - give it a go!

Showing is so subjective, and unfortunately morbid obesity seems to stand supreme over ridden performance and conformation in section D classes. So don't be too disappointed if you're not top of the line in a class of monsters.

My sec D (who is fit, but not thin by any stretch) looks like a thoroughbred by comparison to a lot of other D's you see at shows. But it's worth persevering, because every now and then you will get a sensible judge - Jack won 2 ridden championships (MandM and Welsh Gelding) at a large local show this weekend.

And just to prove that obesity really is bad for show horses. I know someone with a section D that placed very highly at a major show earlier in the year. It is now stuck in the stable with laminitis!

Makes me very glad I am where I am then! My fit Welsh D has had an absolutely stonking season! :D Round here judges seem to be moving away from the fat horses fortunately.

I did a show the other week where the winner was morbidly obese, and even better, lame as well!

Got placed 3rd - the judge commented "he's a bit light, I'd like to see a bit more depth"

My reply: "he starts hunting on monday!"

Judge: "oh..."

She didn't really know what to say to that!

he's a nice chap with a pretty head, I would do workers with him as he looks to have a nice jump, I find that for flat show classes you need to have a welsh D that resembles a beef cow ready for the butcher, and for inhand welsh showing they need to look like a hippo....

I find those remarks quite rude as we used to produce welsh sec Ds for the show ring in hand.......... but I agree!! It is embarassing to say the least. Bullocks, unfit and useless for anything other than running round a ring and a small ring as they run out of steam very quickly!

Have a lot of fun with him doing local/unaff stuff, he's obviously going to make a good all rounder looking at him now. His hindquarters and back leg conformation in particular will mean at county level that you would be at the lower end of the line.
