My pony has an infection and has been prescribed Trimediazine. I'm having difficulty in getting him to eat feed with the powder in it and wondered if anyone has had success with diluting the powder and syringing it?

You can get it from your vet as a paste like a wormer.
See if they will exchange them.
If you feel able they will most likely let you have injectable as well if you are having issues. They only really give you powder because its usually easier for most owners.

I have as I always find mine will eat the first dose but then refuse the next feed with antibiotic in it- just dilute with warm water and syringe. Obviously the antibiotic needs to be a dissolvable one! I also do this with bute for the same reason- although bute does not dilute very well- hence the need for warm water.

I have to syringe antibiotics into my anorexic self harmer at regular intervals! He is usually prescribed 1.5 sachets of Norodine twice daily, which I mix with warm water and sometimes some honey, then scrape it into a dosing syringe and try my best to get it down his 17.3hh throat. He would literally not eat it in food, even if he had nothing else to eat all day. Unfortunately though, I sometimes end up wearing it...as I did on Monday I thought I'd removed it all before taking the abandoned kittens I'd found to the vet to get checked over....but I hadn't and had a bit of a 'something about Mary' moment, until I explained to the vet!

Thanks all for your suggestions and experiences. I am going try diluting and syringing. I was offered the injectable stuff but I struggled administering that in the past with another horse so refused it thinking the powder would be easier, which it would be if only pony would eat up! At least he is a pony and not 17.3hh! - so I have a reasonable chance of success. But if it all goes pear shaped I'll certainly ask about the paste version.

I've diluted & syringed ABs many times to my horse who's very fussy & won't eat much in general let alone when you're trying to get medication down him in a feed.

Are you aware that the bioavailability may be affected if you change the method of administration? You should always your vet if you want to administer diluted, in food. If necessary you should go to a compounding pharmacy to change the formulation.

Exactly thats why you should use the paste instead of mixing powders with water. It is not meant to be administered in that way. Personally we always use injectables for several reasons firstly you know the horse has had the correct dose and are substantially cheaper. The other reasons I wont go into

Just checked with vet and its fine to dilute the Trimediazine and syringe it especially if my pony is not reliably consuming it in feed. He's going into vet surgery on Tues so if he still needs antibiotics after that I'll ask about paste which would be even better.

It's fine to mix it to a paste and give through a syringe - use a wide nozzle one though, and watch the amount of water or you will be there forever!!!!
Just to warn you, The pastes are about twice the price of the sachets of powder - it can make a big difference to owners for not a lot of work.

Sorry, off topic but Tamsin how are the kittens? Where did you find them? Poor wee souls, sounds like they were lucky!

Squittens are on the mend now, thanks! They both have mild cat flu and had secondary infections, so needed ABs syringed down them too! Found by the side of the road in Devon...other cars were slowly driving past them...I couldn't just leave them....they'll become my yard cats eventually!

I have diluted bute in water in the much the same way and syringed it into my horse when he had mild gassy colic once, as he wouldn't take it in a small feed. It was some years ago but from what I remember I had to dilute it in boiling water and wait until it had cooled down before putting it into the syringe and administering it to my horse.

Thanks all. Diluting and syringing was fine. I remembered I had one of those dosing bit contraptions so used that and spillage was minimal. I added the Danilon to the dilution and killed two birds with one stone. Fingers crossed that the broken tooth extraction goes ok tomorrow.

I've often found that mixing with a little peppermint oil and warm water and giving it like a wormer really works well. I give some mints first so that the tastebuds are somewhat desensitised before giving the antibiotic mix, then a few mints after. I follow this as well when I worm mine.
