I thought you may like to see a picture of the orphan foal born this morning, please can everyone keep their ears open for a foster mummy for her, we have contacted everyone we could possibly think of - Many Thanks.
What a lovely foal. I wish I could help but my mare is happily feeding her own foal and I don't know of any foster mares, I'm afraid. Have you asked Channel 4 Racing to put up an advert (0845 076 0191) and contacted all the studs in the area?
She's gorgeous, have you tried Joanna Varden at the National foaling bank? They may be able to put you in contact with someone and be able to give you advice. Good luck.
I am sure you will probably regret asking this question when you hear what happened.
Her uterus ruptured, she started passing intestines, they called the vet and while waiting for the vet, they felt to see if the foal was coming and it wasn't, so they were waiting for the vet devestated they were losing the mare and foal, and then she started foaling the foal, the foal came out with a completely intact bag round it, unfortunately followed by even more intestines, the mare was sat up wickering to the foal but as soon as the vet got there she was pts as there is absolutely nothing that could have been done for her, they were completely devastated but the mare gave them the foal and thay are fighting for her even though the vet that came out basically told them why bother trying to feed her and they were wasting their money giving her the after foaling injections, I wasn't very impressed and neither were they at the vets attitude but they rang the nearest vet practise and got a non breeding vet. The filly is a character and a fighter and they will do everything for her, as you can see from the picture the foal is very healthly!
Try not to get paranoid WD, it is a low percentage of birthings that go wrong, just make sure your vet knows you have a pregnant mare, if you ask they will give you a list of who is on call on which day with direct mobile numbers for the vets, so you can save time if there is a problem by ringing the vet direct without going through the emergency line. The best way is to be prepared, get you vet to tell you what you need for a foaling kit and don't take your eyes off the mare as the due date approaches (mine usually foal when I go in the house to grab a drink).
Simply precious, I hope she finds a foster mum. Having said that having had to put a foal to sleep this year, I never want to have to go through to process of offering any of our mares as a foster mom again and sincerely admire anyone that is prepared to go do so. We have agreed amongst ourselves that we would rather stay with a foal day and night than endure what we did if it had been the other way around and we lost a mare.
In two months time I could have offered my mare as she will have weaned Troy and I am not far from Lancashire... Troy would be too big for her now otherwise would have suggested giving it a go with him still suckling as Hannah has more than enough milk for two.
Opie, I am really sorry to hear you lost a foal, I lost a mare and foal foaling this year (she haemoraged, fitted and died in second and we couldn't get the foal out in time) and we lost a foal 2 weeks ago unfortunately she is only 12.2 so unable to support this foal and also she is still not stable enough on her legs after what happened.
I think I know what your refering to happened when you lost your foal and put the mare out as a foster mum and the last time I lost a foal (in 2002) I put the mare out as a foster mare and they told me what they wanted to do, I point blankly refused, they did it my way or they didn't get the mare (harsh I know but they weren't skinning my foal!) I put a blanket on my foal, he was pts, we left him in with mum over night and milked her every hour, then in the morning we put a big blanket over the foal took his little rug and put it on half a bale of shavings leaving the foal under the blanket, we picked the shavings up as if we were carrying the foal she followed his rug all the way to the lorry, travelled with it, followed it out at the other end took them in the stable, took the bale and rug out, she went potty thinking we'd nicked her foal, we quickly dressed the orphan in the blanket smothered him in the mares droppings and some of the milk we collected and lead him to her she shouted to him and he answered and she sniffed him and looked releaved and took the foal straight away as if it was hers, It ashame all fosterings aren't this easy but I thought the way I did it was kinder on the party that have lost the foal, in this case me but I would do the same if I was recieving a foster mare from someone else.
Shiraz, becki and machannah, thanks guys, I have a mare due to foal in the next week or two and if they haven't got a foster mare by then, we are going to try and put her o my mare and see if she will accpet two foal, she produces shed loads of milk, she is the standing joke at our place because she leaves puddles where ever she stands because she has an endless river of the wihite stuff, but we can't try anything until she foals, as soon as she is down foaling they are going to bring there foal to me and see what we can do x
She's such a lovely little girl, so funny, been running round the box bucking (still a bit unsteady!) and making us all laugh. She's not mine BTW, I just livery on the yard and am a friend of the YO. She's a real star, such fighting spirit.
That is really awful .... glad it's very much the exception (off to order my foal cam for next year). Keep us updated on little orphan annie. PS That vet is a bastard.
Thanks HG will definitely give your suggestions a go should ever it happen again - touch wood it never does but with breeding you just never ever know!
