I have been told by my vet to purchase an orthopedic numnah for my horse. Does anyone have any hints and tips for which ones are good? I need it to relieve pressure lumps that come up on my hoirses back when i ride...my saddles have been checked and are said to be fine. Thanks for you help

If there are lumps caused by pressure then the saddle is not fine. The job of the saddle is to distribute pressure evenly and to avoid areas of uneven or excess pressure. All a numnah will do is move the higher pressure points from one place to another.

Having said that are the lumps by the spine? Do they go down after ten minutes or so? These are rare but can be caused by a weakness in the capillaries on the back. Walking the horse for at least ten minutes at the end of a ride, loosening the girth when finished and removing the saddle 5/10 minutes after disomounting can help this. And a wool numnah is the best type of numnah for the horse.

I'd agree with teddyt - the saddle does not sound fine. I'm a Balance devotee - have a look at their website for lots of saddle stuff (Google 'Balance International').

thank you teddyt and soloequestrian, I have booked for another saddler to come out and have a look. In answer to Teddyt's question the lumps are near the spine, to one side, and they do disapear after a few mins once the saddle has been removed. They do not appear to cause any discomfort but certainly aren't what you want to see after you have ridden, and if anything they are getting slightly bigger
