The Dually Headcollar. Normally I don't think a lot of these 'gadget' methods, but we used one on Jayjay to bring him in, and he was MUCH better. So we tried it on Solo and Ozzy, just to see how they went in it (yes, Jayjay has the same head size as the big guys!) and Solo wasn't so much of a lunatic (that horse NEEDS more work!) and Oscar just ignored it. He's in a sulk with me today though

He was pawing the ground when I'd tied him up to groom him, so I growled 'Oscar NO.' And he didn't pay any attention, so I did it again, louder, with the same non-existant results, so he got a little smack on his shoulder. He stopped pawing, but the look he gave me! Enough to melt your heart! He's a pretty expressional (is that even a real word?) little horse, with donkey ears and pink around his eyes. It was a sort of 'How could you do such a thing? I'm only a poor, harmless little creature, how could you break my trust?' And then he sulked for a bit, until I gave him his tea.

And I measured him! His passport says 15.1, the tape says 15.3hh, which is what I guessed. I suppose we should phone in to update the passport? How do you go about that?

I'm really not sure how much to believe here; however giving you the benefit of the doubt and that the horse had been badly looked after at the place previous to you buying him....I would suggest that you do not raise your hand to him at the moment. I would also suggest that you are quietly firm but kind. I wouldn't shout or show any threatening behaviour just yet. You need to gain his trust right now.

As to the height thing - no idea sorry.

I don't think Oscar has ever been abused, just neglected. He perked up after he'd had his dinner, but what should I do when he ignores my voice? He was getting bored being tied up, I think, but he did have a haynet. I'm not going to smat him again, I was just worried he was going to hurt himself, as it was the leg with the swollen knee and he was slamming it against the wall.

He knee looks a bit better, but I'm not sure what to do about his mud fever, as people keep telling me different things about it.

i was just wondering how bad he looks? i find the dually headcollars very good if you use them properly. as for smacking if he has been abused thats the worse thing you can do

It wasn't really a smack, though, just shoved him in the shoulder. I'm making myself out as some sort of evil, I reckon, by the replies I've been getting to my recent posts on here.

He doesn't look too bad in the photos.

You can't see his ribs or spine or hips because it's so sunny.

Poor Oscar. I would be inclined to be a little more sensative and understanding of a horse with a supposedly supsect background, and recent alledged mishandling. Raising your voice and hand is definately not the way to go.

As for the Dually's - use with caution and NEVER tie up in them.
