Osteoarthritis of the upper hock (talocalcaneal & tarsocrural joints)

If it is bone spavin, then it is the lower hock (common).

Arthritis in the upper hock is very uncommon - perhaps only a handful of cases a year are diagnosed which is why I was wondering if anyone here had come across it!

Yes me too, My horse had it diagnosed recently, and just had Tildren, Hyolate and Steriod injections, with lateral extensions to his hind shoes and rolled toes added for good measure.....now we're about to start the work programme...I thought it was the end of the world, maybe it still will be but veterinary science has advanced so much in recent years that I'm quietly optimistic.

My vet gave me some good advice and told me to research the drugs and condition on the internet, as long as you're sensible about the sources of the information it really helped me understand what was going on.

Let us know how you get on........

My horse had bilateral osteoarthritis of the small hock joints. This was diagnosed following an examination which comprised of lunging and flexion tests, nerve blocks, xrays and ultrasound.

He had controlled exercise, intra-articular medication, two courses of Tildren and a course of adequan. His was classed as mild bone spavin and he has responded very well and is able to compete one day events and unaff dressage to elem level without being lame.
