osteomyelitis of pedal done

my young 5 month old colt stood on a nail and 10 days later after being treated for and absese. He is now in the vet hospital and had surgery last night to remove the infected part of the pedal bone. I is now on strong antibiotics and daily regional perfussions. has anyone had any experience of osteomyelitis good or bad.
 
when my horse fractured his radius that was their biggest concern, the gave him VERY strong antibiotics for weeks to prevent it. The vet said if he did get it the prognosis was very poor.
