I am far too frequently in search of good value turnout rugs and look on HHO to see whats being talked about or recommended. I notice that its usually (in no particular order) Masta, Horseware, Weatherbeta, Fal, Premier Equine, Mark Todd etc that are mentioned.
There is a very strong argument that you get what you pay for but it seems that Axiom, which were quite good value last year on ebay have been a big hit with many people and prices have gone up a fair bit for this winter......
So of the less well known brands (and often cheaper) who likes what makes?

On ebay there seems to be Knight Rider, Premier and Rhinegold, but I also know about Kingshead, Protuff and Ruggles? Any others to consider?

My mare has a lightweight stable rug by rhinegold which she came with which fits her really nicely (alot of rugs don't fit her broad shoulders nicely and aren't deep enough). Not super tough but wearing well enough. Is nice but haven't been tempted by another as I don't mind cheaper rugs for lightweight stable rugs or fleeces etc but for warmer rugs and turnouts I think it becomes more the case that you get what you pay for - for these I generally go for Rhino. Though she has a derby house lightweight turnout which is really fab and brilliant value for money with the regular discounts that they have on.

I bought a lovely MW with removeable neck cover for my 16.2 chunky TB two autumns ago from ebay - make is Norti-nedi and I paid £45.00 for it. It's bright yellow (when clean!) and black and still going strong. Last year I bought him a lilac and navy MW combo from the same lady for £48 and that was worn through all that snow and sub-zero temps of last winter and he remained toasty (he's not clipped though) and I've pressure-washed it and re-proofed and it is still as thick as the day I unwrapped it. Plan was to buy another this autumn but the other two have lasted so well I don't actually need to at the mo.

Neither rugs rub his mane either.

I had a lovely surprise with Kadence rugs. The name of Countrywide Farmers. I bought one for my youngster who has (finally) slowed down growth wise. It was to be his second rug (just in case he shredded his other rug this winter) It fits him really well. It also fits my old boy brilliantly as well.

The significance of this is that they are 2 very different shapes. Old boy is thoroughbred shape and youngster is Friesian.

The worrying thing is that the youngster now fits the old boys rugs!!! (Well some of them)

The turnout rug is 200g combo. Very generous neck and stormflap bum and all the usuals in between. :D £50.

I love Saxon, don't seem to see a lot of them but they're really hard wearing, reasonably priced (180g full neck turnout was £52), and fit my oddly-shaped horse perfectly :)

Norti-Ned look quite similar to the Protuff rugs.... I wonder how many different brands are made in same factory and just badged differently?
My local Countrywide didn't have any of their own brand rugs sadly, but will look on line and at Holmstead... they used to be local to me!.
Thanks all... keep them coming

I would avoid Rhinegold - had a lightweight and it was a bad cut on the withers and caused a nasty rub in 9 hours.

I like robinsons for stable rugs - not as fussy with satble rugs as I am with turnouts. Have Horseware for turnouts - can't beat em

Is the maxima ok in body length?..It may just be the horse they have used in the pictures, but it looks "mini skirt" like... but £45 inc p+p for heavyweight combo 1200d, it looks v interesting

Thanks everybody, giving me good ideas

This is Lacey going through her leggy stage as a 4yo, the rug fitted her well then and still fits well now she's a grown up 5yo.

My old horse had a Kingshead High neck heavy turnout and i was very pleased with it- the straps were not amazing quality but they certainly never broke and did the job well.

A friend of mine used to sell rugs on a tack stand and has an account with Snowshill trade saddlery- I am going to buy my next rugs off her direct. I can get a 300g turn out for £27.50 and a neck cover for £12.50 at that cost i dont mind them being damaged and wont feel the need to get them cleaned because they cost a fortune!!

I wouldn't touch rhingold rugs with a barge pole. The lining eventually seems to stick out at the back and they don't fit properly. I have just found a company called evision equine uk and the rugs I have just got from them are great. Deep in the body and fit lovely across the chest. And they come with a free zip on neck cover which actually fits my horse for a change. £40 for a lightweight turnout. £50 for a medium and £60 for a heavyweight

I go for fit and price over names.

I have a very nice shires rug. A few with no names and they have lasted my pony a few years and were hand me downs to start with.

I find requiste pony rugs are out of proportion, but have one my horse and its fine.

If you want cheap name brand rugs go to Your Horse live and you can get last years / end of line models very cheap. I got a masta heavy weight for £30 was originally £120 it was just last years colours / design. Or try internet for online stores which are selling end of line.

I like Requisite rugs for Cappy a rangy 17-3hh WB. but not for Fany a very wide CB. I think they suit some horse not others.

Cappy has had his lite turnout for years, and he is a terrible rug ripper.

I am a terrible rug snob and only normally buy fal or horseware. however, I have got a couple of Shires storm breakers and also a wind jammer stable rug and they are really warm, tough and cosy. They have been going quite a few years and always seem decent. You would have to pay me to put my horses in Rhinegold or similar and I also really hate Masta.

I have a Icon turnout rug medium weight with detachable hood on Ebay for £35 including delivery 2 years ago and its still going strong. The tail flap is tiny and I do like the big tail flaps you get on the likes of Weatherbeta but for the price its stil doing well. I never seem to have a problem with fit on my horse all 6'6 just seem to fit fine for some reason.

This really depends on the shape of your horse, my boy hasn't got a lot of neck and shoulder, and i've found the only rugs that always fit him are masta. I don't think they are very expensive either, and like a previous post I look out for them when they're last years colours as you get them loads cheaper!

I've have kingsheads rugs and saxon rugs that I bought years ago that are still going strong - although saxon is now part of weatherbeeta (don't think it used to be?).

My gang are PROUD to wear the previous seasons' colours. By wearing previous season's colours it means that their human can just about afford to provide them with hay over the winter - and I know they're far more interested in hay than in rugs!

This winter they will be mostly wearing Aubergine ( rugs which I bought the year before last and were probably all the rage in 2006) - even the boys, and even if the colour doesn't particularly suit them! (Mark Todd rugs - spotted such a good deal that I got them 1 each!)

Had a Shires Typhoon on my big hunter and it was the only one he liked - he even trashed a Rambo excel. There's lots of Shires stuff on ebay and the fleece coolers in particular are excellent.

Jumpers Horse Line ones are similar to the Mark Todd and quite a bit cheaper.

I bought a 'Castle' medium weight standard neck turn out on ebay. Was £32 + £5 delivery with 200g fill. LOVED it.
Really good quality, my old horse used to trash his rugs but he never even got a hole in this one, all hardware was really nice good quality buckles, surcingle buckles had elasticated inserts to hold buckles on etc. Really nice touches. Never rubbed where all the other rugs did, had rings to attach a neck to as well.
I'd have kept it forever if I hadn't sold the horse..

Oh and it was bright pink teehee!! :D

There are some new extremely cheap rugs out called AllPro, made by Aerborn and Fal, well I think Aerborn bought out Fal and have launched AllPro rugs. I got a 400g turnout with neck from ingatestone for £38!!!! It is lovely, will see how it lasts this winter on my welsh D. My boys wear Fal, Horseware, Shires, Premier Equine, Weatherbeeta and Loveson rugs so I'll be comparing it to those.
