I have a welsh cob and we allow our neighbour to graze her horse in our paddock. When I want to bring my horse in to the stable for any reason, the other horse becomes upset and gallops and calls out.

I am concerned that he will jump the fence or get hurt. Has anyone had any experience of this or have any suggestions on how to solve this problem when they are separated.

this is one of the big problems you face having 2 horses. It would be easier to get a 3rd as a companion or continue to keep yours on her own.

Thank you, your reply has been most helpful. Guess we will have to think about the situation more carefully. I hope you do not mind me asking, but i have been lead to believe having a horse on its own is not a good thing.

Having a horse on it's own isn't natural as a horse is a herd animal. Having said that, there are a lot of people who keep one horse on it's own. But like the other poster said, it's better to get a third one in this case. The other option is when you bring one in, just bring the other one in as well. I know how you feel - neither of mine can be left in their respective fields on their own!

well its not ideal no, but some are happy that way and I assumed your horse had been on its own before the friend's mare was introduced? Sorry, i may have misunderstood... 2 can defo be a pain in the butt tho, that said with some work it can be ok, I just have 2. It was much simpler with my last horse who was on his own though, and happy that way.

Agree with others. If your horse is totally happy on her / his own then it may be your best option to ask your neighbour to find another field or let your neighbour stay and get wee shetland or something to keep the other horse happy.
You can't blame the horse, they are herd animals afterall but maybe this particular horse would be better suited to a larger yard
