Other liveries feeding your horse hay??

Hi guys,

I usually have no problem with my fellow liveries giving my horse extra hay if she has run out as I hate the thought of her standing with nothing but recently a fellow livery did this & when I looked in the stable I was a bit mortified to see that she had been given more hay than she would normally be given in a day!!! I'm struggling to keep her weight off even though she is given no feed& although she gets 2 good sized haynets daily & plenty of grazing I keep finding hay over the door of her stable so someone obviously thinks she's not getting enough. Problem is she eats it so fast ( has small holed nets to counteract this)

Sorry posted to quickly!......so would u put a note up saying not to feed or do you think the other liveries are being helpful if she's run out of hay?

I'd be inclined to put a note up stating that she is being monitored regarding her weight etc.

Not sure whats best though as it sounds as though she's standing for long periods without anything to eat?

I wouldn't be happy with anyone else feeding my horses, as I did have someone throw hay to them. It wasted my hay, as my ponies had plenty grass so didn't touch the hay :(

If she is out all day on good grass and has 2 haynets she should not be without food for long so when does this livery feed her the extra hay? I would put a note up other people should not be feeding your horse unless you ask them to.

Hmmmmm, how about:

actually making a point of explaining the dietary restrictions personally and tactfully, and asking this other livery if she would be so kind as to just give your horse the section or so (whatever you choose) of hay that you leave out for her?

Just take that amount out of her daily nets. That way, your horse gets a bit of a top up and 'helpful' livery is still giving hay, but only what you want her to.

:)

At our yard 3 of the liveries do this to one owner, she, like you is desperate to keep the weight down on her native but they do think they know better, I did point out to them when they all get on the bandwagon about this livery that if I put extra hay, commented on rugs used state of bedding etc.. to them, they would hit the roof and they should be minding their own business, since then they have left well alone, I think it was the hint that they might be asked to leave if it carried on, or maybe pay towards the vets bill when the poor horse gets lami? interestingly all 3 owners horses are overweight going into spring ( i would never dare say this to them!) but who's the bad horse owner? it does make you think!

I confess to having done this myself - although never to a horse on a 'diet'!

I used to give a bit of hay to a horse at my yard who was brought in at 4pm to one hay net and would have to stand in until 10am at least the next day. I couldn't stand going up at 7am to feed and turn out mine and see her just looking so dejected. (And yes I did tell the YO - and no she didn;t do anything)

Also - it was MY hay I would give her!

Different situation to yours however.

I've had this prob but my horse is ok weight wise... I left a note.

I know other liveries are now getting the issue to there horses and aren't happy but the person doing it sees no wrong.

It's really frustrating when people interfere.

We once had a livery who fed her horse (on loan from Happa) nothing but left over veg from the market plus a big tub of mollichaff at 6 pm every evening.
Of course by 8pm it had nothing and everyone including me slipped hay over it's door.
Of course it was wrong and said woman went ballistic when she eventually found out and left, but I would do it again under the same circumstances. (though now being older I would actually tell her the horse wasn't getting enough!)
Can your horse have some old hay well soaked to remove most of the value mixed with straw so a bigger net could be used?
Horses are designed to graze more or less continually for 12 hours and snooze between times the rest, and that means quite a lot of hay !
Your horse probably won't gobble all of it and anyone looking will see a net so mind their own business.....

Thanks all for you replies :)

As there are about 20 odd other liveries (not including grass liveries) at the yard, I couldnt possibly (& and dont see why i should have to ) go aorund everyone personally and explain the dietary requirements of my horse. So instead i have put a note on our board (which everyone reads) saying not to feed my horse any hay (or anything else!) im not doubling up her haynets which seems to be slowing her down. She is never left for any length of time without hay- she has a very cute 'neigh' and apparently other people find it irresistible not to feed her when filling up their own haynets!!

I feel your pain OP! Although no one at my yard currently interferes - I have had incidents and comments made in the past. My girl is VERY hard to keep down to weight and she lives off fibre only - other than some carrots in her decahedron once a day. She gets two filled haynets per night in the stable and in the winter two haynets tipped out in the field in the day, coupled with two feeds per day of lite chaff and fibre cubes. In the summer she gets nothing other than haynets at night in stable and two handfuls of chaff with garlic in day.

I have had two people now comment to others that I starve my mare and have had people give her food behind my back.

Very very annoying - and potentially serious.

Just put a notice up saying that your horse is on a strict diet and if anyone gives it anything without your knowledge that causes it to suffer as a result of colic etc etc may be liable to further action.
