I moved to a lovely new yard several weeks ago and everything is great except it is 20 miles away. On the weekends, I was hoping to share the turning out/bringing in with the girl I share a field with and this weekend was the first time we had tried it.

Yesterday she turned out and I brought in, today I turned out and she was going to bring in. Except she can't catch my mare :( I've NEVER ever had a problem catching her, she usually ambles over to me when she sees me coming. My other friends have always been able to catch her, but my old YO couldn't get near her.

Does anyone else's horse have this selective approach when it comes to being caught? Any ideas how we can overcome it? It would be a great help if I can share the weekends

Go up together to bring in and take turns working with each horse. Let your mare get used to the new girl whilst you are there:)

Yep, chestnut mare can be a right royal pain in the bum as she is like this.

On the one day since I bought her, that I wan't going to visit the yard, I arranged for someone the she had known for TWO YEARS to check her. She of course, chose that day to gash herself and wouldn't let my friend near her, even when tempted with her feed. So I had to go down at 11pm having driven down from Leeds to check her leg.

*sigh*

Mine escaped from his sin bin where he was on restricted grazing whilst I was on holiday last year and ran free in 100 acres on the farm refusing to let my friend, who was looking after him, get anywhere near him. I walked up to him when I was home and you could see the "oh s**t she's back" look on his face when he saw me  He just stood there like a lamb to have his headcollar on.

Thanks all, glad to know I'm not alone. Just got back from the yard and as I walked down to the field she shot over to me looking sheepish. What a ridiculous mare :D

Faracat, that sort of thing has been preying on my mind :( Things like that always happen at the worst moments. Right. Some catching practice needed I think!

My witch of a pony never used to let anyone catch her and it was luck most of the time for me. Food never tempted her if the grass was good and she got wise about having a head collar on even with a bit of bailing twine on it and would pull it off. She also ignored rustley paper, treats in fact she was just horrendous and would gallop around me - longest time to get her in ever was just over three hours! The thing that I found worked the best was walking up to her my hands full of carrots, lead rope tied around my waist then when she was eating carrots that I dropped on the floor would take the opportunity of getting lead rope around her neck and then put head collar on afterwards (which was also tied round my waist) if all else failed I found a rugby tackle and worked quite well :D

My boy is usually brilliant, comes to call, but not tonight, he has a new lady friend, and I can't get near him, carrots would be no good as the little ponies would mug me. Any suggestions, he will be hungry tomorrow, and it will be snowing, so I hope he will see sense.

My loan horse is not the easiest to catch but if you offer him a carrot he is fine for everyone except one of our yard managers who has to bring him in twice a week. Luckily her days are days when I can go and catch him if I have to. He is getting better but is still a bit hit and miss with her it is so weird especially as she says it was her who found him his lovely home with me lol!

My welsh cob is very selective. He's often waiting at the gate for me, or failing that comes to call, & if I take too long coming back for him after getting my other lad in he starts wailing & trotting little figures of eight until I get to him. He's good for a couple of friends too, but that's about where it ends because most other people seem to have real problems with him ranging from not being able to get close enough to get him to the little horror turning his heels on them - sometimes I'm told that he can't be caught in his stable by some people! Even food doesn't make a difference & it's a real nuisance if I can't get there but there doesn't seem to be a way around it because he's fine if I'm there.
