Other people riding your horse

For me, it depends on the horse. One of mine I'm usually quite happy to put people on (altohugh she seems to be going through a bit of a stage at the moment!) but the other I'm very careful about as she has a habit of getting people off if they're heavy handed. If I had something anyone could ride I'd be quite happy to let most people ride it, although I would want to keep an eye on them to start with.

I tend to let most people ride Holly whether i'm there or not as i'd like to find someone who can get on with her better than i can - don't think she really likes me lol!! But Blue i'm a bit more picky about and nobody rides him if i'm not there because he has a habit of trying (and sometimes succeeding!) of bucking people off if i'm not there to tell him not to - but he's never done it in front of me!

I will let any qualified instructor ride my horse or my boyfriend, or anyone i feel can rider better than me. A couple of people here have sat on Shadow, and they know hes not an easy ride, but if they are competant why not?!

Am about the same, it is good for other people to ride him, and I'm quite happy for anyone to get on him and walk him around for example as long as they are reasonably quiet!, but as far as schooling/working him, I am alot fussier, only people I know are as or more experienced than me, and will improve him, or at least ride him to the standard I expect myself to (if thats makes sense!)

I let people ride my horse as long as I am there to give them guidance.
Let a fried of mine have her on loan once (she took her intro eventing and bsja) but when she came back to me after 6 months she was so resistant on one side it took about a month to stop her leaning on my right hand all the time.
Wouldn't let her go out on loan again but happy to let friends ride her at home.

I let others ride Ludo but he was safe as houses as long as you didn't ask much.

Kelly1982 has ridden Bonnie and I'd let Buckinghorse ride her, but not all and sundry - she's not 100% straightforward. Having said that Kelly probably rides her better than me LOL!

i try not to be too precious about who sits on my mare but i am likely to stick her hackamore on as she is still a bit of a div after her tongue incident and i dont want being bitted to become a hang up.

as long as they have light hands and arnt total idiots im happy for most people to have a little 'sit'.

Anyone can ride pickle mainly because he is on working livery but I really dont mind. Pickle has taught two people to ride and I am proud of that not annoyed he has complete beginners on him. Also other people riding does come in useful! Like when I lost my confidence out hacking a client took him out every week until pickle was brilliant!

I am not obsessive. o be honest it suits me at the moment for him to be used as a guide horse as he gets some hacking (which at the moment I don't do) but don't think I would like total novices to ride him unless under genuinely competent instruction.

I'd let any of my friends ride my horse, and my friend let me ride theirs.
I'd be wary of letting a stranger on board though and when I eventually advertise for a sharer I will be quite cautious.

Pretty much anyone can ride Asti, unless I knew they had a reputation for being horrible, though she's well able to deal with bossy people!!! My philosophy is if anything happened to me and someone else had to ride her, its far less traumatic if she's used to other people.

Plus its meant when she's been ridden by judges, she's been a total angel whereas some horses can freak as they are one rider horses.

And she's such fun, especially for jumping and XC which I'm not fond of, I like to see her and a rider having a blast competing, its nice to share!

Depends on the horse - Breeze - only good brave riders, Delia most people with supervisions, Fleur - only really experienced and confident riders, Cairo - just about anyone, Chancer - so far only my little cousin has sat on him but I hope he will turn out to be the sort that most can hope on.

I have strict rules about what they can do and anyone heavy handed will be removed immediately.

I often courage nervous kids etc to have a go on Cairo - he is such a good boy and has really helped people to enjoy riding.

Personally I think it is good for a horse to experience different riders subject to suitability.

I will only let certain people ride my horse!! I am very fussy and they have to ride similar to me.

My friend is a very good rider and competes well on her horses at a high level but i dont like her riding my horse as i think she is too harsh with them. She is a bit too heavy handed for my liking (not hitting them or anything just in general) and i prefer people to be more sympathetic and 'ask' not 'tell'!!

My question to people who won't let other people ride your horses (and this is not a critisicm I'm just interested) but what's to say that another rider couldn't ride your horse better and thus teach them something you can't?

Obviously its each to his own but I personally think that unless someone is a really rough rider it's pretty hard to mess up a horse after riding it a few times.....or have you had an experience to the contrary?

Well at the end of the day, we pay for our own horses, so if we ruin them, or believe we are the best thing, we only have ourselves to blame.

Thing is what stops them teaching YOU how to do teach you horse it?? There is no point in them teaching your horse new things if you cant carry on with it.

Plus another thing to look at is, once someone rides your horse better than you and to its full potential then you get all the sarcy comments from people about 'that horse is too good for her' and then you just feel sh*t about yourself. I'm not speaking from experience by the way LOL but you know how b*tchy the horsey world is.

My novice OH has learnt to ride on mine, and I let my friend (who's a good rider) hack him and school him. Whilst I'm at uni though, he has two sharers. One is a good little rider, the other not so much, but can handle him, she is a bit of a push over. I vision bad habits creeping back, but to be honest, I'm not in the situation to not have her loan him, as I need him looking after, and I can't afford him to go on full livery. I'll probably let her go when I'm back for the summer, and then it's going to be lessons after lessons to get him sorted with the aim of a few events at the end of the summer. He's an easy horse to sort out little bad habits though thankfully, otherwise I'd be much stricter!

I think it depends on the individual animal, and the particular rider(s) in question. I would be very wary about letting anyone else ride Bo...and would want to be there at the time if i did...but then he's a fairly sensitive soul, and it's taken a while for us to build up a rapport. That said, i wouldn't hesitate to let my trainer ride him as she is far more experienced and capable than i am

Trike on the other hand, is far less bothered by what goes on up top. So long as someone has the basic skills and isn't afraid to sit a buck, then i would let them ride him...but again i'd want to be around !

Flatwork - At the start I would let most of my friends have a sit on her, ie a little walk around, however after letting my niece ride her and I did have to cringe as she wasnt turning off her legs and wasnt riding from the inside leg to the outside hand - and she had had riding lessons apparently

. So maybe I have reviewed who I let sit on her.

Jumping - NO WAY! I would only let my trainer and the lad I bought her off jump her.

Ooooh no I don’t let anyone on my pony apart from me, my instructor and the groom (but he is only allowed to hack out, he is not allowed in the school, over jumps or anything) The groom has got his stage 4 riding and is a better rider than me but I am still a fuss pot! Instructor very German but as she owned the horse before I cant say much really!

Im sure some can ride my boy better than I can (hence why my trainer rides him). However, he's quite quirky and will take the piss if given half the chance so I dont want to be needing to "have words" with him frequently because someone else has let him get away with things.

Mine is also very fussy in his mouth and if he gets upset, it takes quite a while to get him working back into a contact.

Also, at the end of the day, I have the time to work him myself and am happy with the way i do work him
laugh.gif
He doesnt need "teaching" anything at this point so I dont see what either he or myself would get out of other people riding him

I really don’t mind other people riding my horses as long as I feel they are not going to be scared by the horse. I would let literally anyone on Blacks (well as long as GinaGem didn’t mind), my 5 year old niece rides him.
And well Bodey, if you think you would like to have a go then please, please, please be my guest! He is in the process of being backed.

Regularly though, Me, Gina, Mum and my instructor ride our horses.

Actually I forgot to mention something here. My horse is more classically trained and actually, Id be quite willing to let someone with a genuine interest in classical methods have a sit on him to feel how different it can be to more modern methods.

On the other hand, i also come under fire from some for training the way I do and due to that, Im more warey of letting people with more modern methods sit on him.

Does that make sense? :|

mmmm, I find this post really interesting! I suppose I don't class myself as a great rider and I'm very lucky to have a very good rider riding him on Saturdays for me which seems to be making alot of difference.

Fact is, I LOVE seeing better riders than myself ride my horses, and I love seeing them go well! BBs has ridden all of my horses (apart from Chico) and they have all, without doubt, gone better for her than me on the flat! I dont mind one jot, its nice to see

I let some people ride my horse. I let a young girl ride her a couple of times a week because she doesn't have her own horse and would not have the opportunity to ride something as well schooled/smart as mine (sorry, sounds arrogant but her other options would be riding school horses if you know what I mean).

My horse has taught her to ride leg to hand and what it feels like to have a horse deep and round underneath you. I think it is good for my horse to have the odd different rider as well and I like to watch (with my mouth shut LOL) so I can see where my horse is evading or where she is weaker and work on those things myself. I think it is nice to give people opportunities especially because I feel so lucky to have a horse at last and I remember what it was like to really really want one!

I don't let people ride her who are going to hang onto her mouth though and they have to be committed to improving either her or themselves before i would let them on board.
