Do you think he likes it??

He hasn't been off it all night, I was trying to get a picture of him sprawled across it on his back, but I disturbed him (only for a second before he snuggled back down!!)

Plus the picture was taken on my snazzy new phone!

(Note the pile of his toys in the bottom corner, I'm sure he has more toys than I did as a child! What a spoilt pup!)

Its very uummm big!!

Will he grow into it??

It must be comfy, if he hasn't got off it.

We bought P a new bed before Xmas, and its obviously the nicest and comfiest, as all the cats fight to get in it as well. Its a bit of a free for all to see who gets in first.

Love all the toys, our house is just the same (P thinks anything with wrapping paper on it is hers, she got so many pressies over the holidays).

Just noticed he's not docked!

I know

Not what I would have chosen, but will be interesting to see how he gets on, as he carries it very low and straight, but he does wag it very hard.

I am under strict instructions to take pictures of ANY damage he incurs. He has already had a small split on it, and he's not even working in thick cover yet!

My Mum has got instructions on how to wrap a tail with human strapping to give it some protection, so hoping that will help him.

LOL! No I don't think he has got any growing left (except outwards!) but he lies completely stretched out normally, so we had to get him a huge one! It's about 4ft by 2ft 9 ish!

We got a normal sized one and he just picked it up and ran around with it, this one he does actually think is big enough for him to lie on!

Today he took half a step forwards, and then a bit of a step back, but I was still chuffed with him
grin.gif

Took him for a walk with my OH and his parents who were visting, felt a bit of pressure for him to behave, which of course meant he didn't!
blush.gif
Actually he wasn't that bad, just not as good as last night, but he came back a couple of times for the pill tub, but I didn't really push it today

The biggest difference was...

I was stood waiting for the others to catch up, just letting him mooch around on the end of the lunge line, not really paying him much attention, when suddenly he turned completely focused on me and rushed over with his tag wagging!!
grin.gif
Something he has NEVER done before!

He was doing his glancing back to check where I was even more today, so generally I am chuffed as I feel we are getting somewhere!

As you can see we are really encouraging him to toughen up, he leads a hard and deprived childhood

Hen, my spaniel is docked - But- far too long. I suspect its only a third off but he has never had any injuries to his tail - so I am sure Otto will be fine :0

Good news on how he is listening to you. I think spaniels really are a law unto themselves and only you will know how to carry out his training - but it sounds good to me so far!

My Mum's eldest cocker is docked to field trial length (which I think is about a third off) and his splits his really badly at the end
frown.gif
But then my Dad's youngest cocker is probably docked about the same and so far he hasn't damaged it.
I think once it spilts it will always do it, and it all depends on the dog and how the carry it/wag it/work cover. My Dad's dog certainly doesn't hit cover as hard as my Mum's used to (although he isn't as big as a pansy as my Dad first thought!)
grin.gif

He has a very long tail, it has taken me ages to get used to it, but now I couldn't imagine him without it! Otto's tail hit's his sides, and has hit him in the head before he wags it so hard!
grin.gif

I'm not too concerned, as he was really bought as a pet, so he is unlikely to work every weekend during the season, plus I need to go out hunting!!
grin.gif

LOl - hunting for me revolves around the shooting season but luckily where we are we have a really long season (First Saturday in August to end of April!)

Do you think that Cockers are more prone to tail injury than Springers? - I can't possibly think why this would be but it does appear to be the case.

I'm not sure! My Parent's dogs are all cockers (bar the IWS) and only the eldest one has ever had problems but all the others have fairly short docks, apart from my Dad's youngest which is a similar length, but then they definately don't work the same way.

Perhaps it is the different ways cockers and springers work, although I am not sure how they work differently!

Otto has had one split so far, but we don't have a clue how he did it as he was in a field of short grass at the time!

The people that bred my lab breed cockers - none of the last few litters were docked and they use three of them for shoots (he's a head game keeper) and they haven't had any problems

They go out several times a week.
