Last night Otto has his check up at the Vet's after ripping his tail open last week.

The Vet was really pleased with how it is getting on, she says if we continue with what we've been doing then we might just be able to convince the sking to settle down.

I am really pleased with the Vet, she is not Pro Docking however she has set a time limit (unless I am unhappy with how his tail is healing before then) of 4 weeks for it to heal properly and if not then we will have to seriously consider amputation. Rather than dragging it out trying lots of different things and stressing Otto out completely.

So for any of those with long tailed Spaniels that are damaging themselves, that need some tips, this is what we are doing with him...

- A Spray Containing Tea Tree Oil sprayed on his tail 5 times a day, to stop him chewing it and also give some anticeptic protection.

- Strapping his tail during walks.
We have found that Elastoplast and lots of electrical tape work best for us, using this guide... A Guide To Protective Tail Strapping
You may need to experiment to find what works best for you, but the way we do it stays on for an hours walk through heavy woodland and Otto getting soaked in the lake!

The Elastoplast alone wasn't sticky enough, so I had to electrical tape the bottom to keep it fastened, so take the tape in your pocket on a walk and you can re-fasten if necessary.

The Vet recommended lead walks only until it was healed, but by strapping it up we have kept it protected enough that his walks haven't changed and he still runs around like a loon!!

We are also going to get some Aloe Vera juice (as recommended be Slinky Unicorn), but I keep forgetting to buy it!!

Unless it toughens up a lot, I don't think I would want to risk his tail by working him properly, so looks like that is off the cards

So it just looks like I will have to get a docked Springer pup to train up to work

If ever there was a reason for docking, he seems to be it

Poor boy.... I am not for or against docking really (have a schnauzer with and without a tail and like both)! But I can see there is a real arguement for it being carried out.

My dogs are not workers so not needed, but poor Otto

I'm not surprised you lose track TBH, the reasons for you to not like someone seem to be,

1. They have a pulse

So glad Otto's tail is getting better!

Awww, I am glad to hear the little man is on the mend

BUT, how dare you post a thread about Otto without a picture of the gorgeous boy?!

Glad to hear it's all healing, I'm not pro or against tail docking but I'm a little confused, tail docking can be done for surgical/veterinary reasons, if his tail is injured currently then he could have it docked under ga and then you would be able to work him. My lab x smashed and injured her tail at 18 months or so and after various bandages etc etc that she whipped off she had it amputated to about 8in long or so. (This was 7 years ago now!!) I loved her tail but her wagging and screaming as she hit it was enough to make you cry so off it went....

Now don't think I'm pro docking, I hate puppies being done without a GA or painrelief especially when the vast majority of those puppies will never know a country/working life. I'd rather the future of an individuals tail was governed by whether it has a problem with its tail and whether it is going to work. Loads of labs and setters tails become injured in the same way but are not traditionally docked so those dogs have a chance of having a tail, those who have problems have them docked....

Sorry I've probably opened a can of worms here!!! Just to add to the bickering already going on!!!!!!

I am very much Pro Docking

I would rather every Spaniel was docked working or not, as the procedure is vastly quicker and less painful than having it amputated later on.

I know he is able to have it amputated, however it is a big procedure, has all the risks associated with GA and also alot of risks regarding healing.. I know a dog that had to have THREE amputations just to get the tail to heal, it ended up with a tail the length of my thumb!

Due to this most Vets are reluctant to whip it off unless it's badly damaged or recurring damage, hence my Vet wanting to wait 4 weeks (this is very quick compared to most Vets!). If he has to have it off, fine, but if not then he just won't work

For now the strapping is doing it's job, In fact the person who created the guide uses it whilst working her dog, so there is still a chance he will work. Tonight he has been crashing through the undergrowth and it's not even slightly raggedy, so I think I have perfected the art.

And here is his funky tail strapping, he has a selection of colours depending on his mood - Red, Blue or Silver

Good isn't it??!

After tonight's success I am re-thinking the never working him, as before it has always been on it's last legs when we have got back to the car, or only lasted 30 mins, but tonight it was a bugger to get off, so would definately last longer

Reminds me of a whole summer of strapping a GSD's ear with silver insulating tape to stop flies getting in

My OH is hoping to get some end rolls of elastoplast from his rugby club, otherwise Otto is going to have the most expensive tail in Doggydom!

What a nuisance Hen - poor Otto.

In the long run, it might be better if the vet does dock it now, but even if she doesn't, don't rule out working him just yet - you might just have an excellent peg dog on your hands
