Ouch! Why does it hurt more when you're older?!

Well I nearly got through 2009 without falling off!
But alas Hovis had other ideas.....
Had a lesson last week with my wonderful army man instructor and all was going well. I've felt so much more confident of late with the big man and our jumping is coming on. Until this week...
Hovis (and I) have a bit of a bogey about doubles when the distance between then is anything less than 3/4 strides. He seems to think he hasn't got room to land, stride then take off again and has a tendancy to duck out right to the second element.
This he was doing so army man put up a block and pole to try to stop him ducking right and channel him over the second element. Someone however didn't explain this to Hovis. We came over the first part, he was turning right in the air and then proceeded to try to jump the pole that was "channelling" him.
Cue me being deposited over his shoulder.
Ouch ouch ouch.
I got back on and we had a canter and a jump over some single jumps before i said enough was enough.
Since then my right shoulder and my neck are killing me!
Why do we not bounce so well once you past 30?!!
I rode again the next day but not for long as i was so sore - more for him to know all was ok because he gets quite freaked when i've come off him.
Pointless sympathy pleading post but I am sat on a train to scotland in pain and feeling utterly sorry for myself!

As i grew older i started hitting the floor like a sack of potatoes, our joints are older. The confusing thing is i have a lot more padding (fat) so in fact it should,nt hurt as much "unless the extra weight make you hit the ground faster with gravity" .

Owww! Gentle ((((hugs)))) for you. Hope it feels better soon. I am well over thirty and dreading the next time I fall off, I've had some close shaves since I started riding again four years ago but only one actual unscheduled dismount so far.......

Ouch - poor you.

You are right, it does hurt more after a certain age, and thats just riding, let alone when I fall off!!!!!

. My left arm still doesn't work properly after cracking it mid-summer, and various other bits of me would really rather go and have a cup of tea and a biscuit than shift itself off into the cold. The result I have to say, of too many years of coming off.

Hugs, very gentle hugs, hun. Have a hot choccy and look at the pretty scenary, and book yourself in with a good chiro/massage!

Tell me about it - my 4 year old has dumped me three times this year and I now know that I no longer bounce like I used to!

Hope you're not feeling to battered xxx

I totally agree!! Had a pretty horrid fall on Saturday when the green ex-racehorse I ride decided to try to overtake on a bend in the forest... put a spurt of speed on which I wasn't expecting, took corner WAY too fast and as he only canters on one leg (the wrong one) and the ground was covered in wet leaves we both ended up sprawled all over the floor.
I'm now sat at work unable to look to the right, and still feel winded three days later. OUCH!!!
And i only turned 26 yesterday so I'm dreading how much pain I'll be in in a few years time!

LMFAO

I totally agree with the 'falling when older hurts more'.. dreading the next bump :-/

Hope you feel better soon :-)

Ouch! Poor you, lots of sympathy coming your way. Can you get some heat on the area, and wash painkillers down with plenty of hot choc/whatever looks good?
Did the same myself exactly a year ago and was the first time I'd come off since I was twenty (34 now) - couldn't believe the difference. Got myself back on and finished lesson but couldn't move head for a week afterwards! I didn't bounce, I made a hole...

And when you're a few months shy of 50 it appears you can break bones without even falling off

playing with new horse yesterday at first SJ comp. Had a very awkward jump in the warmup, slipped my reins but it seems that thick rubber reins coupled with grippy gloves and a big strong warmblood neck can snap the knuckle of my little finger.
Didn't really notice at the time apart form thinking ouch that hurt (or similar). Jumped the class (placed 3rd) then really felt it.
All strapped up to ring finger now so wondering how I'm going to play tonight

I never fell off until I was 27 - horse I was riding went left as I went right - only at a slow canter so ok. Then a few falls off Breeze - one where I managed to land on top of the XC girder was a bit uncomfortable.

Delia - well I learnt to jump 3'6 without the horse sometimes - I was now in my early 30s and survived.

In my late 30s, Fleur really put me into orbit once - not only did I come off a 16.3 horse, but she was doing her harrier impression at the time and was a good 5' off the ground as I went up (so even more high) and out - that one really did hurt and was pain killers and stiff for a good week.

Now in my mid 40s I do everything to avoid it as I really don't bounce like I used to. Stinky has parted company with me three times so far (luckily he looks after me) and at least he is only 15.1 and it has been a out the side door rather than over his head.

We did our first SJ competition on Sunday and he was a star - took me round and came 2nd in his first class 1'6
grin.gif
We had 4 faults in the jump off in the 2' - which was my fault but best of all, despite him jumping like they were 3', I stayed on

I do feel for you - coming off a big 16.2 really is not the best thing you can do. Plenty of hot baths and sloe gin helps.

Hey well done you!
I'd clap but it'd hurt too much!

I have fallen off Hovis 3 times in 2 years so not bad going. I think I just walloped my head and neck this time and boy does it hurt! Poor lad gets really upset when i come off so I had to get back on and reassure him its ok.
We'll just have to work harder at these troublesome doubles... when i've stopped hurting!

''Tell me about it - my 4 year old has dumped me three times this year and I now know that I no longer bounce like I used to!''

Me too !!! I fell off on Saturday and was wondering the same thing. I have really hurt my back this time.

Funny what you say about Hovis - Stinky really gets into a panic if I hit the deck, hence he slows up or stops if he feels me coming adrift (assuming he has time).

It is nice when you have a horse/pony that wants to keep you onboard. Little Jet is the same, when Ella goes pearshaped, he is so patient as she climbs back from hanging round his neck.

Sloe gin - really does help the pain - I also still often jump with a neck strap - though this weekend forgot it and grabbed the mane and then ended up with no reins as my hands were so slippery with detangler - he had been detangled and well groomed prior to going.

Next time I will have neck strap and his mane in plaits so I don't get tangled/slippery and gain 4 faults!

OMG thought it was just me and mine this weekend, my youngster decided it would be fun to start bucking and twisting as we were cantering up a small incline on Saturday. Managed to sit to about 4x bucks/twists (very proud of myself) but the 5th one got me and as she came down on the twist i came out of the side door ....... ouch. I am now sat at work with a very bruised right leg, hip and arm and a stiff neck.

And it's very true that although i have extra padding, now i am 40 years old i definatly do not bounce anymore.

Horses eh????

Funnily enough my hands were covered in detangler too!!
In fairness i was coming off as we went over the first element - it was a right mess!
We just can't do doubles without ending up in a pickle. He pulls violently right as we go over the first bit and then we are doomed! The bit that caused the major issues which resulted in the dismounting was him then being honest enough to jump the pole we had put at the right hand side to stop him!!
Dipstick!!
He has a bad habit of speeding up if i wobble which doesn't help.
I lov the big brute dearly but sometimes i wish he was 14.2HH!!
