I managed to trap my middle finger in a manhole cover this morning, whilst checking the mains water supply for the yard. After nearly fainting at the blood and quickly blackening nail have sat for the last 2 hours with it wrapped in frozen peas!
The bleeding has stopped and now am just left with a dull throb so not too worried, but as I have a very active riding weekend planned, what would you guys recommend I strap it up with? Can you get any sort of finger 'protection' over the counter, as the thought of catching in a piece of bridlework makes me want to be sick.....!!!

I found vet wrap brilliant when I broke 2 of my fingers (horse bit them!). I know I should have gone to hospital that evening, but I was going out, vet wrap did a brilliant job, until I could be ar$ed to get my fingers down to A&E!!!!!!

Vet wrap - what a brill idea. I shall go and rummage through my 'horsey' first aid kit, and may even give it a squirt of purple spray for good measure.....!

If the nail is black and throbbing it won't stop hurting until the pressure is released. Go to your GP or A and E and they will put a needle through the nail (not as painful as it sounds) and you will feel better instantly.

Or the old wives trick - if you do need to relieve the pressure - get a paperclip and heat to red hot (slightly glowing) and push it gently through the nail. Red hot cos it kills all the germs on the clip and then it "melts" through. Remember to have a cloth over the top cos it does tend to spray.

And if you think it's going to hurt - it doesn't cos that what they did to me in A&E - complete with said paperclip and one of the nurses lighters (yes one did smoke). Remember it's just like a horse getting hot shod and they don't mind (too much)

Good news! I can ride with it - it did start to bleed again after I had popped some jumps in practice for the weekend, but didn't notice until I had got off...
Please say that the pain will go away without 'lancing' it as I may well faint, especially if it spurts!!?

It is an awful lot less painful if you have loads of black under the nail. Believe me it sounds awful but the sudden relief of pain is exquisite... and it stays away too. Best if you get someone else to do it to you. And no the pain won't go away for a week or so if you don't. Ball's in your court
