Have been lucky so far to avoid any major issues since buying my horse a year ago.

On Saturday we had just got back from a hack when he stood on a stone (barefoot) which crippled him. The vet had to dig it out - it was in deep enough that I hadn't seen it when I lifted his foot, and typically he stood on a pale coloured stone which was the same colour as his sole!

He has seemed fine the past couple of days, but today was crippled again so vet back out and thinks it's infected. So he is poulticed up and on box rest with danilon and norodine for a few days. There is SO much heat in his hoof, the vet was quite worried by how hot it was.

I know these things happen, but I can't help but feel so guilty, especially because the weather finally picked up and he was back out 24/7 again - typical!

I hope he feels better soon. My pony got a piece of gravel stuck in his unshod hoof 3 weeks ago so was on box rest (which drove him insane) and hot poultices ever day. You can also try soaking the foot up to the coronary band in Epsom salts in hot water. Mine keeps kicking the bucket over! So mine got better but has now come down lame again and I think its the abscess again! He'd been sound a week so I can't believe it! Trying to get the farrier in tomorrow (vet said farrier was best!). My pony will not go down to stable yard now, he just naps awfully. And hes so lame. So I'm having another go to get him down to stables tomorrow and more poulticing. I've spent so much money on vetwrap, poultices and duct tape its unbelievable!

It sounds like yours is in the best hands. Graze him in hand a bit if you can. And make sure its fully healed before he's running in the mud! Even a dry poultice. Good luck!
