Anyhoo! After taking all your excellent advice a few weeks ago, I donned my hi viz vest (overtrousers were, um, a good fit for a small child :o) and head torch and at Flamehead's suggestion my LED lantern as a spare.
B wore my Sam Browne belt, reconfigured just a little (we have strangely similarly sized waists!) and Wee Sis wore the doggy coat.

On the road, I kept the torch flashing as the cars approached and then covered it with my hand or pointed it down as they got closer so as not to blind them (again, suggested on here :)), then turned it off til we got to the lane.

Well, Carey R you are right, your eyes do become accustomed and I actually used all my senses - those sheep are STINKING!!!
We were fine on the lane and on the part of the trail which has been deforested, but when we got to the tree lined avenue, I braved it for a few minutes until I heard a big skid and stones going flying, which meant B was after *something*.
I gave some sharp verbal and he hit the deck, good boy, in fairness the line didn't even go tight so he knew I meant business.
After that I turned the torch back on, if only to watch his body language, he's very transparent, you know when he is hunting something!
And as for little Bella, as usual she was very good and I forget she is there sometimes :o

It was a lovely bright first night to try it, the stars are always good up here but tonight they were phenomenal and I spent the walk back down the lane with my head thrown back just staring at them.

So it will take some getting used to, but I didn't fall on my hoop or step in any sheep poo as I was expecting, and I have to say I really enjoyed it!

Thanks again for all your help.

I love late night walking, we usually go at about 12 midnight, but we went earlier tonight, and it was pitch bloody black in the farmers field:eek: about 20 min into walk, all dogs off lead, I thought we would get back to the van minus a few, but all present and accounted for:D will have to get some flashy collars now, as can't find last years.
We usually walk the nature reserve and I spend me time looking up at the stars.

Nice pic:D

I used to go around the fields at work last year, but this year we have had some minor pilfering going on(), so I am a bit unsure about repeating this:o It's not like I have two big scary GSDs to protect me:rolleyes:;)

This sounds like a great idea!

I need to get my JRT out for more walks as she is starting to get middle aged spread but I struggle working full time, doing the horse and now the nights are drawing in. This could be the perfect answer. We have a walk just across the road which is almost completely off road so I wouldn't even need high viz gear.

I would never have considered it until my working hours changed, it's only two days so far but I'm getting used to it and I got loads of help on here from some seasoned night owls :)

I do take the torch etc and I am glad I did because I got caught out last night with the very dark section and even though I have two big dogs, one of whom has a pretty OTT defence drive :o I also always take my mobile and tell whoever is in the house what route I'll be taking, to be on the safe side.

The dogs LOVE it!
