Hi all,

We're doing our very first show in a couple of weeks and was wondering if you kind people might be able to advise us what to wear!

My pone is a black feathery cob (and gorgeous to look at but I would say that!) We're thinking of doing the working hunter clear round and perhaps one of the in-hand classes.

Have been looking through other threads about what to wear and decided that it looks as though I should go with a green tweed. Other than that, I get a bit confused. I have black long boots, some nice beige breeches and a plain white shirt. So assume that's all ok. I also have a very ancient navy blue velvet hat, which is in very good nick but probably not very health and safety compliant. Would that be ok or should I get a velvet cover for my skull instead..? If so, should I go for navy or black..? Being a bit of a freak for colour-coordinating I'm not convinced about the green jacket/black boots/blue hat combo - seems like a lot of different colours to me. But is that what you're supposed to wear..?

What do you lovely people all wear for your native-type classes..?

All help gratefully received so we don't disgrace ourselves on our first public outing :)

Thank you!

P.S. My daughter wants to get in on the action. She's 8 and wants to do the lead rein class. Can she do it on my boy (he's a generous 14.2) or can you only do lead rein on smaller ponies..? Right, that's it - I'm done now!

Working hunter is Normally

Navy Hat
Tweed of some sort doesn't necessarily have to be green buy green is smarter IMO :D
Beige/Canary Jods
Long Black Boots
White Shirt would be ok although normally people may go for a yellowy colour with maybe a yellow or red tie
Brown leather gloves

Tack should be brown also

Ditto Kirsty+Java but if it's a small, local show, don't worry about tack colour as long as it's clean and fit's properly. Also if you're not sure about your velvet hat then it's probably better to put a navy hat cover on your skull hat. Just remember to enjoy it though, and good luck! :D

Thanks guys.

Have just been looking on ebay and have added a couple of jackets to my watched list. It's going to be an expensive week :)

Regarding lead rein class- Check the individual schedule, it differs from show to show but I would say the majority I have come across do have maximum heights of pony (usually around 12hh).

Good advice above!

Navy hat definitely, whichever one you are safest in - black is only for males in the showring :)

Brown gloves, preferably leather.

Black long boots.

A pale yellow shirt often looks nicer than white, get some value yellow dusters from Tesco, bung shirt and dusters in washing machine and you'll have a pale yellow shirt,I did, it works :)

Brown show cane.

For your in hand class it would be more correct to change your breeches for trousers and wear short boots or shoes you can run in! Your trousers should be dark if pony has light legs and vice versa.

I have seen LR classes without a height limit but are very rare. Some shows will let you do family pony with child on leadrein, it's worth asking the secretary.

If it is a local show don't worry about having exactly all the right gear for your fist try!!! Do you have any tack shops nearby who stack second hand stuff? They may have some tweeds.
What Appylass says is correct re in hand but again for local level if you're just having a go to see if you enjoy it then your jods/long boots would be acceptable.
With regards the leadrein no-one can tell you the answer to this other than the show secretary. All local shows have their own rules!!
What everyone has said above is largely correct and if you start to get into showing more seriously/regularly then this is what you should be doing. However, if this is your fist show and you may not want to persue it further then get what you can and see how it goes. Good judges will often offer advice on your turnout/performance at a show; they will have seen your horse so their advice may well be as good as any.

What size tweed do you think you'll need? PM me if you prefer.

Hello everybody,

Thank you for all your excellent advice. And also about the quick change needed for the in-hand bit. Especially like the tip about putting yellow dusters in the wash to make my own canary shirt - it will match the pillowcase that had the same treatment (by accident of course!)

Thanks also for thoughts re. the lead rein class - will call the show secretary and find out. Can probably cadge a teeny pony off someone else but am being selfish because if I take my daughter on another pony I probably can't manage to take my boy as well :D

Ruth83 - am looking for a size 36ish tweed if you have anything suitable!

Thank you again everyone. Hope this is the start of a whole new hobby for us :)
