HI,

We are going to our first show in a few weeks and i of the classes we are doing is in hand (riding horse type). What can I do to catch the judges eye?

This is the horse.

Being well turnout, correctly presented and listening/being polite to the stewards/judge always helps.

Keep movement active and forward going - and don't let your horse fall asleep, cock a leg, start grazing during the inspection.

On my first in hand class with my horse he decided to do the longest wee ever as soon as I pulled him out of line for inspection

Just make sure you are both spotless and that he looks nice and alert the whole time, even when you think the judge isnt looking.

Good luck

You probably already know, but plenty of people 4get. When running up remember to turn the horse away from you, when you trot/walk back past the judge. I see so many people 4get though nerves & pull the horse/pony round.

Bang the tail and pull the dock (or use one of those tail trimming thingies) - this will enhance the horse's quarters.

Feed some oil every day to get a good shine (although looks naturally shiny anyway)

Choose a suitable bridle that is correct for his type and enhances his head.

Make sure you book the farrier to get the feet trimmed!

Forgot to say this is a local "fun" show.

I feed a cup of soya oil every day, he is lovely and shiny.
This photo was taken 6 months ago. Also I don't want to pull his tail can I plait it? And can I wear my Navy jacket & jods or does it have to tweed?

He looks lovely. I agree with all the above, perhaps you could do some in hand practice so you dont have to drag him along, or be dragged!. It will also make life easier when you have to trot up for the vet and farrier. good luck

I didn't know that, do you mean I have to go round the outside of the horse rather than turn the horse round me?
