I wrote this for Louis who I lost this summer. He was a horse of a lifetime, my best friend. I miss him everyday.
Your coat so bright and gleaming
Your eye kindest of all
Your heart was overflowing
A brave and gentle soul
You gave your life to me my love
And I gave mine to you
The day we said our last goodbye
Broke my world in two
I couldn’t see you suffer more
The pain you had to bear
To keep you here on Earth with me
It wouldn’t have been fair
You carried me through field and lane
For hours at a time
You gave me wings so I could fly
And free my busy mind
For hours I would stand with you
Just needing to be near
To feel your presence next to me
Washed away my fears
To move a brush over your coat
Filled my heart with joy
Combing through your mane and tail
Each day I did enjoy
The gentle whiney you gave me
Running to say hello
Your sweet breath on my cheek
Were all music for my soul
You gave me everything I asked of you
And then you gave me more
The last gift I could give you
Was to give you pain no more
Our time together has now past
I miss you every day
A part of me went with you
On that final day
In heaven you are free again
To leap and run and play
And feel the sun upon your back
Each and every day
The pastures they are rich and green
For all the whole year through
Reunited with old friends
You’re loved in heaven too
I loved you from the very start
For me there is no end
Every day I cry for you
And all my love I send
If I had one wish I’d bring you home
But I know that it can’t be

In some other time and place
