Hi all,

Thanks to those who offered advice earlier- I am pleased to report that with some prokolin, some anti-bs from the vet and lots of TLC, the dam is doing well. As of course, are all puppies- eye opening began this morning :)

The red in the first is the heat lamp, which is probably also why Mum is panting in the 'pleased' picture. Really enjoying having them, but I'm exhausted and my back hurts from three weeks on the sofa now- one week prior to whelp, two post!! Beginning to move back down to the bedrooms now, but it's a big house and I want to hear.Hope you like them!!

I'm a little nervous about putting these up following recent threads, but would like to assure everyone these are out of my home produced Intl Champion show saluki, by an Intl Champion show saluki dog, and will have our 48 year established kennel name. Homes are lined up, though obviously this will depend slightly on how they stand at 4/5 weeks, but in any event all the homes are approved and checked, and viewing will start beginning May. The black one is the smallest- not much smaller than the other bitch, but the three dogs are quite chunky now!!
 
I adore Salukis. The pups are adorable. Mum looks well.

Can I ask a duh question? Are Salukis good off lead generally or do they bog off? I'm tempted for a future dog, I just think they're fabulous.

Well, they are hunting dogs- so they WILL chase. However, mine all go off the lead and come back. Admittedly, I lost three once for two hours after a deer, but I waited patiently where I left them- with a fair amount of shrieking after them ;) I am human- and they appeared, exhausted and very happy. One is very obedient- has her gold good citizen, actually it's the mum in these pics- the other less so, but still knows all the usual ones and would never bog off. They will not peg it without something to chase, they aren't into aimlessly running off.

We do send them lure coursing no problems, and have sent a group off coursing (pre ban ;) ) across the moors before, though that was mine and a lady with four every experienced courses.

The best part to a saluki is that they don't smell, they don't jump up and fling themselves around the house- a good walk and preferably some running time and they snooze on the sofa all day till dinner!!

Do PM if you want to know more- including who to source puppies from or discuss with. Very few litters are bred- there are fringe breeders of course, but mine is only the fifth litter in the UK to be bred by a 'reputable'/ KC Assured breeder this year. Our Saluki Club Secretary (Ken Allan) will happily point you in the direction too as we all registered our when we are expecting with him, and he points prospective owners in prospective litters directions.
 
I keep seeing lurchers x Salukis which are lovely, but I'd want a full bred, just not for some time as I have a very dog aggressive youngster, spaniel, currently. I couldn't cope with more dogs. Defo a future prospect, tho. They're beautiful, keep updating the puppy pics, I'm dying to see them develop!
 
She is absolutely gorgeous, what adorable pictures :)

When I was a little girl and used to read through my "Observer book of Dog Breeds" (remember those books?) the Saluki was my absolute favourite - such beautiful, noble dogs and if my life hadn't led me into the shooting world, I wonder if I would have followed my childhood dream and had one now? :D

Cinammontoast- yes, we have had some lovely rescued lyrchers though obviosuly I am against breeding them, partly because I only believe in breeding for a purpose and partly because I spend years of my life preserving the quality of my breed :)

Absolutely- I understand the 'no more right now' line very well LOL saluki litters are planned up to years in advance- we decided to mate this girl when she was made up to champ, and that was two years ago! So one dog pup was reserved two years prior to conception!! It took a while to find exactly the right dog- though interesting the dog we used here also sired the crufts best of breed saluki who went to group 3 wih his young lad handler.

The lines are so ancient, and so fiercely protected. One of our considered dogs is not available for stud apart from to his owners own females as she is so strongly defensive of her line.

All our pups will go with 'not for breeding without original breeder consent and full knowledge' clause. Our line was gifted to me by this red girls breeder, who has done her best by it all her life and I'm not risking it for anything!!!
 
I think that's exactly as it ought to be. I'd never breed from my boys! Two of them are lovely temperaments, lovely looking, but just not a good idea to breed for no good reason.
 
So do I sprout!! We were beginning to think of starting a human family..... Now I'm not so flipping sure!!!

Gosh, I've sounded a bit like a vigilante up there! I am a nice reasonable person I promise and do actually have a fleet of mongrel terriers on the yard- all snipped ;) lol
 
Yes absolutely- paddling pools are the way forward!
Unlike wood can easily be sterilised/ cleaning- steam cleaner and a bottle of Milton thrown in!
It rolls up small and stores well, and we put the dam's bedding underneath so not hard floor but no suffocation in first days. Best part is no squishing against the sides! The mum enjoys the soft pillow effect too :)
 
Pretty sturdy to be fair! Nails are obviously kept religiously short at the moment anyway. As soon as they can climb out it will go down and we use pen panels to separate an area off- one of the sections has a half and half stable type door, and the mums can pop over it as they please. When the pups can also pop over to be honest we just let mum ask us to go in or out. :)
 
The paddling pool is a great idea, although I think Evie might have been disappointed to find there was no water in it. :p Presumably the bitch digging up in the early stages of whelping doesn't damage it?
Lots of photo updates please, I have never seen Salukis as tiny pups, would be really interested to see what they look like.:)
 
Much better echo in my opinion- though my young nephew felt sure there should be 'sea' in it.... We always have it out a week before so they get used to it, and so I get used to circumnavigating it in the kitchen!!!

Hmm no MM- I wouldn't guarantee the water tightness of it now- parts are quite scratched, but they don't seem to dig the sides so no bursting or punctures *touch wood* I do have a 'emergency bike repair' kit to hand just in case.... Somewhere between the thermometer for mum, the anadin for me, and the brandy for us both!!!

I love Salukis - used to watch them course on a friends land before the ban - absolute poetry in motion and there were entrants from the USA and Japan who would fly over for it - they loved the breed too.

(Numpty and Dingle must be having a breakdown over the amount of litters on here at the moment! :D)
