We have three horses. Mo is 20 years old & we've owned her since July 06. In that time she has broken both back legs, torn several tendons & ligaments, coliced a few times, is arthritic everywhere & has just recently been diagnosed with cushings. Yesterday she was kicked (we think) in the field. Not lame, but heat & swelling where u don't want it. We have agreed with the vet that we're not happy to boxrest her again, so she's out & we'll see how she goes. Definitely no more riding for her though.

Then there's Dolly, our 12 year old section A who has been off work for 11 months with a sacroiliac injury. She is insured, so has had everything possible thrown at her to help fix her. Today i asked our vet to re-assess her to see if she could come back into work yet. She was lamer than she's ever been :'( It's not a lot at all, hardly noticeable infact. But past experience has proven that however she is on the lunge, she's 10 times lamer under saddle. So the vet said that's it. There's nothing else we can do, so she'll have to be a field ornament. Im gutted. I honestly believed she'd get the all-clear today.

And then there's Molly. Our 13 year old Welsh d x tb who we've had for ten years. She went lame in 2007 with a ddft injury & has been on & off since. We went barefoot in July, but today she was hopping on that foot on the left rein.

Im not asking for a lot. Just one horse to be sound & rideable. It just seems that no matter how hard i try, nothing ever goes right for them. At least they're still here though, so Im grateful for that...

Know what you mean. It seems the more horses you collect the less chance you have of a rideable one!

I know how you feel, mine always seem to be broken. :( It is horses for you. Try and remember the good days you've had in the past and know that one day your turn will come round again for some more.

That is awful news :(

Someone once told me that I always end up with the sick and lame for a reason, that being that I give them a forever home, but sometimes I wish I could have a healthy one.

Touch wood current pony is fine, but I am always on tender hooks.

Good luck x

You say you thrown everything at the welshie so I assume you have gone down the route of various physio treatments? I would maybe keep going with things like physio to be honest and see if it does help. 11 mths is not that long in reality so I wouldn't rule out her being rideable again.

As for the 20 yo well blimey!!! She seems like a bit of a monster doesn't she! Remarkable she's got through what she has - sounds like she's tried and tested all injuries possible!

Thank you everybody. I do love them all, but i just long to have a horse who doesn't get sick or injured every 5 minutes. It's frustrating to see the local gypsy horses being neglected when i try so hard to look after mine, yet get nowhere.
ladyt25 - dollys insurance is up in a month - we'll keep at it til then. She's had physio (countless sessions), infrared therapy, shockwave therapy, courses of cartrophen, etc. but apparently all to no avail. Maybe she just needs longer than we've given her...fingers crossed.
As for old-girl Mo, she's just an attention seeker! I think she has munchausans! She's still happy being a field ornament though, so as long as that is the case, Im ok with it.
All my hope of riding now lies with Molly getting sound......
