out of 100% how confident are you on your steed ?

It depends on the horse, my last horse I'd say 100% - although not the easiest, he was as safe as houses. My current horse who Ive had for a few years now (from a youngster) I'd have said I was only about 70% confident on him riding at home because he used to be cold backed and very sensitive/spooky, but within the past 2 years he's really grown up and now I'm 99% confident on him at home. Competitions have never been an issue (he actually goes better away from home). Hacking I don't do as I'm a nervous wreck though (due to other horse incidents in the past).

I'll be taking Rescue Remedy this weekend and see how I get on. She's such a good girl but my nerves are making her tense so getting into a vicious circle. So stupid really because I've owned her 7 years and we used to hack out alone and in company, achooling and compete in dressage and showing. The other stupid thing is that I actually miss riding her

No point being nervous on your horse.... What would be the point? Horses are meant to be fun

Ever taken a risk - can be fun. Are horses ever 100% reliable? I know mine will go over whatever we are trying to jump, but if he smells a pig, life can get a bit interesting!

The OP didnt say how reliable a horse is, it says how confident ARE YOU?! Ive taken plenty of risks

Mine live on a road with pigs at each end so they have no choice lol! They will have the odd snort when the piglets are out, but they soldier on

I've had my boys aboyt 12 months now and when i first had him i was about 70% confident on him - but every time i ride him, even though hes only a baby, he proves to me what a wonderful trustworthy little skallywag he is xx

I definitely need to join this Wimpy Riders clique! Whilst tacking up and preparing to get on, my confidence is about 10%. Once on board and fiddling with girth etc, it's maybe 8%. As soon as we start moving, it shoots up closer to 75% and stays there whether we're schooling or jumping (haven't had a proper hack on him yet!). I don't think my confidence will ever be 100%, but considering that in the past it would never have risen above 5% even on the lead rein (

) it's a massive improvement so I'm happy! I'd like it to improve a bit more though - I'm tired of having to psych myself up and talk myself into it every single time I ride.

Charmaine, I can remember feeling sick before I got on my horse, especially when I had just got my lorry and was taking him somewhere. I am probably about 90% confident in my abilty - and know my limitations as a relatively new rider. (Nearly 6 years now - and I'm 36). I like that fear though - it's a fear without malice which makes it far more satisfying to conquer.
If I was getting on a young horse though I expect my confidence would drop significantly!

On my old horse I had for 14 years 101% hacking ,90% jumping,100% schooling.

New lad after 18 months 100% in safe school,80% in spooky school, 10% in Car park when wind blows from wrong direction (seriously) 5% on fun rides only done two bucked off both times.

But we are getting better in fact sometimes he's better than I am as his memory is shorter.
