Out of interest...

Both of ours are in, and both are wearing a underblanket, a duvet and a heavyish stable blanket over the top. Cheeky has a 'baby blanket' clip and Reggie has a full blanket clip. They are rugged up well because Cheeky's 26 and feels the cold (he's a TB) and Reggie still needs to gain more condition and we really don't want him shivering it off...
 
Mine is trace clipped, but more or less grown out and is in in a MW with no neck

Fully clipped. JHL MW Turnout - no neck as she was sweating with the neck on. She is in at night.

I think she is always so fat as she never gets cold and doesn't need to waste precious fat on keeping warm.
 
Still cannot get over how much you guys all rug! With all the weight of some of the combinations mentioned above it is not suprising they need so much as you are flattening all the hair with the weight.

Anyway, mine is in a very open barn, same as being out, and has a HW TO on - yes, I have relented this year and bought a HW! He can damn well use some energy keeping warm if he needs to LOL! It was -11 here last night, suppose I should really put something else on but hey, he is as bright as a button and hates being rugged so having only 1 on is bonus!
 
I feel really guilty now because none of my 3 have got rugs on

Two had been living out unclipped 24/7 but I took pity on them in the blizzard on Tuesday night and brought them in and they've been in at night since which I'm glad about as it was -14C here this morning. They're carrying plenty of weight and aren't cold so I'm not worried about them getting cold.
 
Hmmm, that may be good for you Wheezy, but I'd rather have my horse coming out of the winter without looking anorexic tbh, and this combination plus ridiculous amount of feed seems to work rather well! He's an old man and deserves to be warm without too much effort! And our other boy is also a skinny minnie who is still a bit on the thin side, so once again we want fat and muscle rather than skin and bones.
 
Weezy - I too cant get over how many rugs pople put on. The more you rug, the less air circulates under the rugs meaning horse may then get cold easier and require more rugs creating a vicious circle. On top of that, rugs are generally not made to be layered and are no longer breathable when a second is lobbed on over the top. I did wonder when people around here had 2 and 3 rugs on their horses in that mild spell in october, how they were going to deal with it when it turned cold! Have seen one horse wearing 6rugs!! Poor divil was sweating like a pig(hence i was called out to him "colicking") so told owner to take a few off or hed get a chill! Hes now wearing 3 at night and 2 when in during the day - its an improvement and hes back to his happy self!
My TB youngster is out unclipped without a rug. his field has natural shelter and a number of round bales of hay are put out for the 15-20 or so horses in the fields. I considered rugging him but that would involve bringing him in as he has never worn a rug before. And hes never been stabled before so more hassle than its worth. I saw him on Sunday and he was in great form, galloping around and bucking. He has maintained his weight well this year and shows no signs of being miserable in the cold (plus in his defence hes in ireland where its "only" about -8).
 
fully clipped and not clipped both in heavy weight TO 450gms with necks they have been in these for about a week! feel really mean about taking off warm TOs to put on cold stable rugs so leave them all toasty in their TOs in this weather

Out, living in the mountains -14c last night and a foot of snow. Blanket clipped. Duo w/ 100g and 300g liners. He's toasty
 
I sometimes wonder about the number of rugs people put on - I always think if one layer gets wrinkled up it must be so itchy and annoying!!
Ours have maximum 2 layers....
13 year old arab, was clipped right out in Oct and has mostly grown out,, he is the biggest wuss of all of them and has a decent MW underrug all the time, then either a HW stable or a HW turnout on (he's out during day and in at night and holding his weight nicely)

19 year old WB mare, lives out 24/7 and not clipped, got a MW Mark todd stable rug with a HW T/O on top. The stable rug only goes under the T/O if its going to be sub zero, if hovering around 1 - 2 degrees or more that one comes off and she has just the HW.

Rising 4 year old SSH, he's got a MW stable rug and a fleece at night, and I leave the fleece on and swap the stable rug for a HW turnout during day. Know some 3 year olds winter out but he has never lived out before this summer and doesn't grow much coat, seems happy as he is.

my 2yr old has his weatherbeeta oricon on its 360g with 180g neck he is in but i dont buy stable rugs x
 
Zak, clipped out and in 100 gm no neck, 300gm no neck, 370gm with neck
Digli clipped out and in but a very, very cold horse - 100gm no neck, 370gm stable rug with neck, 420gm outdoor rambo with neck and he is only really warm in the mornings. Never seems to get too hot.
Neo and Harley unclipped and out with field shelter - 375gm with 200gm over the top. All very spoilt horses but check them all the time and non of them are too hot.
 
Blimey, can't believe the number of rugs some of you need

my TB mare has got a 360g TO on 24/7 (she's in at night but I don't change rugs), she has got a fleece under it at the moment but that's because I'm treating a fungal infection on her back and want to be able to change it for a clean one every couple of days to try and stop it spreading. She has a very high BMR so stays warm readily although is permanently on the lean side, but any more rugs and she'd be sweating.

The 30 odd year old shetland is still naked and seems happy enough, and one of the youngsters is still in a fly sheet and happy as larry!

how inadequate

Sienna is a lardarse, she is fully clipped and has a MW Rhino with full neck day and night. She's in at night but protesting & wants to stay out and play in the snow.

Jack is fat, full tb without much coat but unclipped. MW full neck, in at night.

Coco 16.2 ish, has a token lw rug so he doesn't feel left out but is unclipped & porky out 24/7

Fabian has no rug nor is he likely to have one as he is a native pony and so unlikely to melt or get frostbite. out 24/7

trust me I would prefer to use less rugs but Fleur is rather 'delicate' and from experience if I do she loses a lot of weight and fast. She is fine with only one rug if not clipped but she sweats far too much with even light work hence always given a hunter clip. Her rugs are adjusted throughout the day as required (got a fab YO!) and this is the balance that works at the current temps (was -12 at 9am morning 1.5 miles away which is as close as I can get with current snow!)

Also with the rugs the under layers are all specific under/duvet rugs so are designed to be layered!

As said not my ideal but I do what works for my horse

Cob-X, 18yrs, out during day/in at night. She has a blanket clip. She's just tonight upgraded from her Rambo duo (100g) with 100g liner to the duo with 200g liner (so total 300g). No neck cover. Worried she'll be too warm but the 100g liner needs washed and it's already -9 here, so should be ok.

Really don't think any horse should be wrapped up in more than 2 rugs, must be so uncomfy. If they need more warmth, get warmer rugs in the first place rather than weighing them down with lots of thin ones?
 
Stabled, blanket clip, one HW MT stable (no neck) and a HW Wug. Normally would have a bit less on, but he lost condition at the previous livery yard and I'm taking no risks even if he is looking very well at the moment. He was, however, very happy to go out for a bit naked in the snow today!

He tends to be quite a warm horse and gets slightly cross if you over-rug him, but he seems happy with the current arrangement so that's fine with me.

Not very happy that the padding in the Wug has gone all lumpy (no padding stays in the neck part of it at all). It's about 7 years old, but it hasn't exactly had hard wear! Last thing I want to do is have to buy another HW turnout.
