Out Of Nothing But Interest....

Hmmm...I paid €4000 for Sid ISH (by TB out of RID mare) last April, rising 5 at the time had done nothing, backed previous Oct & hunted (shock horror this being Ireland!)...he has nice enough breeding & now rising 6 is jumping a small course nicely for me, hacks out in company (not sure about alone yet - my fault!), works nicely in a contact (for some people!), has one ODE under his belt (only PC but still) good with ditches/water/traffic...

I actually think I'm taking him quite slow but then there's two of us 'coming on' together and to be honest until we started getting 'out and about' he was completely bored & starting to get grumpy....

But then again he's your horse & presumably you didn't buy him to sell him right now so if you'll pardon the pun it's really 'horses for courses'....

if i hadnt moved from warwickshire i would of loved to

Some take a 3.5 year old and have him walk, trot, canter and jumping in a week and compete with a few months I'd rather let a horse mature get good ground work, which if nothing else will make life easier for me later

Doesn't seem like it is working that way!!

There are many reasons why we work horses young - much like gymnasts start young because they need to need to establish flexibility, strength and agility; successful horses do too. People are always saying we should start race horses older, but that will not decrease the amount of break downs - their bodies need to build up to racing, if you do not do it when they are young their bodies will never tolerate it, and they will break down when pushed!!

Secondly their mind works the same way - I have never seen an older green horse become anything. When a horse is young, they are taking things in learning how to learn, etc - much like kids. Kids who go to school younger do better in school, and are more likely to go to University.

Personally in my world anything 4 and under is young - when they turn 5 they have to be acting like a proper horse. For the polo ponies that is playing polo, for the others it is competing hunting, etc. If a horse is 5 they are slightly late, no reason for a horse to be 6 and not be doing anything, especially when misbehaving like you posted about today.

I know you have ambitions in riding - but I really think you need to find a mentor; someone who can help you with your horse, you can learn from, and then you can follow in their footsteps - if you want to ride in the olympics learn from an olympian! People will say that is impossible but it really isn't. I want to win the Kentucky Derby - my mentor did it last year!

I don't agree with the comment starting children young at school means they are more likely to make uni. Some children just do not have the concentration span to cope with a class room situation. As a child I went to Kindergarden in Nairobi & this was much better. We had lessons outside, & we learnt as a group. My daughter is fairly bright, & struggled with the class room until she was 8yrs because she got bored with the sitting all the while. We are individuals as are our animals, therefore we should structure their work to suit them. If it suits the horse to start young then so be it, but if they can not handle the work load expected that will bring it’s own problems. I do know that a 5yr should have done a bit more then this horse for the money paid, but that is a matter of opinion as well. We have a Pro Set rising 4yr old that was started last summer & turned away & is now being brought back into work. He is about 17hh but tires mentally so his work is done in small bits, he is not mature enough in his body or mind to be doing more then he is. I expect though by the time he is 5yrs that will have changed & he will be more collected. When Charlotte bought Fenandez he was given time out because he had done too much & it was blowing his mind. He went out & in the field & learnt how to have fun, & see where he is now! If she had not given him that time he would have been burnt out. As I keep saying we should be working at the horses pace & listening to them, if they are happy to do the work then fine if not then we need to back off a bit.

Hi Majoc - the trouble is that FMN does not seem to be riding gthe horse alot or trying to get work established with him....and therefore how can you judge if you are doing too much?

I must say it was a pleasure to watch your video - not often I see a horse lunged without half of a yacht equipment on anymore. I like your horse, think he has a decent canter and I would not mind at all that you are bringing him on as you do. From the pictures I 'would pay'(would never buy unseen but I am playing the guessing game) up to £3. However, if I went to see you riding him and liked his basic work (if he was working in a prelim outline, forward going and eager to please), his loose jumping was good up to 1.20m and his temperament was good I wouldn't mind paying in a region of £5k.
Once again, such a pleasure to see someone taking time with her horse

I was also under the impression that he was sold to you already broken...?!

I'm also confused, you say he is terribly green, but in your other post you say that he jumps 1m35

Research suggests that is the case -

He is 3 - a lot goes on between being 3 and 6. I am exactly the same way with you horses, a good 15-20 minutes and they are done. But by 5 they are a proper horse, and doing their job.

Whoa, over priced!
For me he doesnt move well enough, and i wouldnt have paid that for somethng that was difficult.
WHat does your trainer thnk of him?
No matter what breed they are manors and education should still be installed. I would much rather have a less mature 6 year old with manors and the basic knowledge than a bolshy 8 year old that hasnt done anything!
As weezy said, the stronger they get the more control you need"
With no competition record, people are going to question what is wrong with him. So id get out there asap.
