with a very wet not hugely messy but when stressed digs up his bed and if i can deeplitter i will...

Aubiose
Micanthus
Straw

im not allowed anything else at the yard im on so which would you have?

i have currently got Micanthus but im not getting on with it but if its best then i will stick with it! also my horses eat staw like its going out of fashion dispite having hay :o

I would choose Aubiose or a mix of Aubiose as base and then the straw where they wee and plop probably. Thin layer of Aubiose would suffice over rubber mats if you have them, thicker if no mats.

Why are you struggling with Miscanthus? Very similar to aubioise to manage though not as nice to look at. Couple pounds cheaper per bale. Try taking out wet once a fortnight topping up with a bag a week. Much more stable hence poos stay on top of bed

micanthus just isnt soaking up the wee :( we are leaving it in as long as possible as we were trying to deep litter but his bed was always soaking wet :( hes on rubber matting as well we are ending up putting 2-3 bales in a week... to start his bed we put in 9 bales as he has a 14 x 18 stable and his bed covers half but the middle is always soggy :( he was fine of snowflake soft chip he deep littered very well and i only took it out once a month so it didnt get to deep but micanthus seems to move about a lot when you first put it in and then once they have peed on it it no longer soaks anything up :/

For me it would be straw, lots of it. If you can get wheat straw that's cut fairly short I find that's fairly absorbant & doesn't move about much. If he's eating more than you're happy with then spray it with Dettol or Jeyes.

After years on shavings then wood pellets we were given loads of free straw this year, I have been really plesantly supprised about how easy it is, I use quite a bit but that seems to keep the beds really well, and as I'm not fussy about how much I chuck out mucking out isn't time consuming as i'm not digging though every last blade!

As you're not happy with the miscanthus, try the other two. Experiment with deep and semi-deep litter and taking out the wet every day. Use a process of elimination to decide on the type of bedding and mucking out system that works best for you and your horse.

(You could also try a thinner straw bed and shovel the whole lot out every day and replace with new bedding?)

Straw everytime for me.

In the winter I pick the main poo out and then turn the bed over and slice the wet off. It becomes quite compacted so they are less likely to dig it up but not as hard work to lift and air the floor once a week. I don't find it smelly and wet. They are less inclined to eat the bed as well. If she needs a top up its normally only a sprinkle every other day at most.

I am in love with my Miscanthus beds! Freddie has a clean bed, ie I take his wee out once a week and he has 2 bags a week, it's such a sturdy bed with lovely big banks and he lies down in it every night. Now the girls have damp stables and the bank behind the stable drains through when it's very wet outside, so the girls have deep litter, they have poos out each day and have a bag of clean in once a week, again lovely big beds and I don't disturb the bottom x
