Hello everybody,

I'm new in this forum and especially sign in to look after advice for a good, waterproof & breathable outdoor/turn out rug.
So sorry for another rug thread but I have some problems with the search function.

Please excuse my bad english I'm luxembourgish and do not often speak or write english ;)

My horse is gonna change stable to move to a stable where she will be out 24/7 in a group with 20-25 horses so I need a good, 100% waterproof & breathable outdoor/turn out rug.

1200D or more, no leaking, no fleece inside, no combo, highneck will be ok, perhaps liners possibility, not too expensive, not too heavy when wet,

What system is better ? Having different rugs with different weights or 1 lightweight + different liners ?

Thx very much for help :o

Hi again ;)

Looked a bit in internet and find some english brands not known in Luxbg. or Germany like Premier Equine, Falpro, Shires, Swish, Ruggles, Maxima.
What can you telle about them ?

Other advices ?

I like Premier Equine - I use their Trio system (100g outer rug with 100g, 200g and 350g liners). My horse lives out 90% of the time but if she comes in she stays in her outdoor rug.

The reason I like PE rugs is that I can fine tune the level of protection she has without having a mountain of different rugs.

The one thing you should know about PE is that they come up very big and you will need to go down one size from most other brands.

Thx pansymouse :)

But read that PE rugs leaked and where very heavy when wet ?
The older rugs seemed to be better quality than the new ones ?

You may be right abou the quality; my PE are between three and eight years old. They don't leak because they are professionally washed and proofed. They can be heavy but when wet but aren't all rugs, the weight is the water surely.

I do think that now PE has gone all jazzy in their designs they may have lost sight of their quality. I'm tempted to go for a different brand when mine wear out but I don't know which yet as there's still many years left in my PEs.

My PE is heavy when wet. I don't expect a rug to soak up the water, just repel it.

I have no direct experience of the others you mention, but from what others say Fal or Shires are good rugs. Swish are also ok but the fit was odd on my pony so I returned it. My preference is Weatherbeeta. They last years and I have 10 year old ones that are still waterproof.

Thx meleeka.

Concerning Weatherbeeta .... did they have a liner system ?
And rugs without fleece inside ?

Years ago a had a Weatherbeeta stable rug but with fleece inside so I sell it.
And it has a very deep cut in front ? Hanging down to the "knees".

No they don't have fleece, although I remember when some did.

Perhaps it would help to know what breed/build your horse is. Mine are natives so quite wide. Perhaps that's why they fit mine better?

I like Fal Pro and Shires.

Fal Pro, the original ones are expensive but IMO the best, the next is Shires, nice and roomy and not to heavy. If your horse has big shoulders then Rambo and Horsewear are tight, in the shoulders. Premier Equine - a few hear have them and they are not bad rugs but seem heavy when wet.

Mark Todd again are heavy when wet - A lot round here buy Equine Essentials rugs which seem light and are a good budget rug and not heavy when wet. http://www.equineessentialsdirect.co.uk/horse-and-pony/horse-rugs

@meleeka : for the saddel the saddler told me that she is build like a Welshcob ;) large breast, big and large neck. Big shoulders.
+- 1m68-1m70.
Have a Harry Dabbs expectation.

@TYSSANDI : sorry I'm luxbg. and do not know (understand) all abreviations :(
IMO ?
Fal Pro changes there rugs. The names ... but also the models ?
The look nice I find.
Are the really waterproof ? Heavy when wet ?

Thx for the advice and link of equine essentials. I will go and have a look ;)

In general ... Better 2 different rugs in different weights or 1 light + liners ?

Maxima Equestrian are very good value for money - they sell some of the cheapest 1200 denier turnout rugs you will find. They also have the advantage of very adjustable front fastenings that make it easy to get a good fit on a wide range of horses and ponies. I have been very pleased with mine, which are now on their second winter with no leaking even in the heaviest rain. However, from your post it sounds like you may be based in Europe and Maxima only deliver within the UK. I'm sure Amigos are widely available in Europe and they would be my next choice, more expensive, but not heavy when wet. However, be aware that some of their cheaper rugs (particularly the Mio) are only 600 denier, so check the description before buying.

Personally I like to use liners or under-rugs because it gives you more flexibility, plus I can wash the under-rugs in my washing machine.

If you're in Luxembourg, you may be able to get Equi-Thème and Decathlon/Fouganza rugs.

I have found both to be good value for money, although they don't have a liner system.

You can send me a private message in French if it would be helpful for you?

Thx Casey76 :) Yes I have Decathon in Thionville and Arlon.
But a client in my stable has Fouganza rugs but they are not really waterproof :(
Some hours outside in the rain and they leak and the horse is wet under the rug :(

Equi-Thème I can order in internet.
There is one new model that looks nice.
But are the really waterproof ?
Perhaps this Equi-Thème without liner and then one english rug with liners ?
So I will have both ;)

I've used those very adjustable Shires rugs on a variety of types with great success. It's such a shame that they changed the front fastenings on the new models.

If your horse fits them, then Horseware Rambo rugs are fabulous and have a liner system. They don't have leg straps though, so I don't use them in high winds.

They are very heavy when dry too! One of my liveries has the full system but so far has only used the 100g top rug. I hate taking it on and off. Weighs a ton!. There are a lot of sales on at present. Google Naylors, Derby House, Hope Valley, etc. I find weatherbeeta rugs to be very good. You can get them at half price on some sites right now. I also love Derby House own brand rugs. Amigo are great if you want quality and light weight (but go for their 1200 denier rather than 600). Of course, if you have the budget, you can't beat Rambo.

I have never had any issues with my Equi-Thème rugs leaking. The "Tyrex" range have 600, 1200 and a new 3400 denier available. They are available in various weights: no filling, 100g, 220g and 300g

I have two horses who love to roll in the mud, and until now, they are dry under the rugs no matter how much it rains.

Thx ElleSkywalker.

@Casey76 : good to hear about the Equi-Thème ! :)
But on their page I didn't find any rug with 3400D ?
Just 600, 1200 and 1680 from the Thyrex range.
