To be fair I wouldn't know the law in that situation either and would be scared of putting a trigger to a horse without the consent of the owner or the approval of a vet... I really hope I'm never put in that situation!

If that had been my horse and some merciful soul had put a gun to his head to end his misery I would be giving them a very large bottle of booze as a Thankyou.

How could the Police NOT find a Vet?

Ye Gads, they have phones don't they? Call the station and get a number, problem solved.

Thats a disgrace, even if the officers didn't have a phone on them (which they all do nowadays) all they had to do was radio to control for them to look up a local vet like Enfys said

Oh what a shame. That happend to my friend's horse, it was horiffic. She fell off when she bolted, the horse took off, ran straight across the road to the stables and collided with a car. Fortunately people nearby heard the accident and someone sat on her head to stop her trying to get up. The vet was called immediately but she bled to death just before he arrived. At least she had people saying kind things to her and stopping her struggling before she passed away but it was absolutely horiffic. My friend hasn't got another horse...
Fortunately the car driver was uninjured.

It's horrific and a real tradgedy
Thw worst bit is there are lots of small animal vets locally - can they give permission do you know???
The local large animal vets is only 20 mins mind

Agree with Enfys completely here. The farmer should have been allowed to shoot the poor horse.

The BHS Road Safety video circa 96/97 contained the history of an accident just like this. The rider never rode again, never got over the trauma of her horse dying while the police spent 45 mins trying to find a vet and she never forgave the local driver.

We never learn. Heartbreaking.
