Outriding Greenham Common / Headley area????

Hi there,

Looking for advice from anyone local to Headley/Thatcham/Kingsclere area in North Hants/W Berks border.

My partner and I are looking at a place that's in Headley, nr Newbury but not sure how good the riding out is from there. I spoke to one horsey local who wasn't that positive about options.

Can any of you help? I was told Greenham/Crookham Common was an option to get some fast riding in. And another place was mentioned nearby that you need a permit for - but I didn't catch the name. Think it started with a 'W'.

I think there are a few bridleways in Headley, and other than that it's lots of quiet lanes. It depends what you enjoy really - I'm happy with a mix of quiet lanes and bridleways - it is main roads I don't really do. I am based at a livery yard on the outskirts of Thatcham where we have access to Greenham and Crookham Commons. Greenham is big so you can explore, Crookham not so big. Others on here may know more detail about the area further east of Headley. Good luck!

It's not too bad over there. I used to live in Ecchinswell. My friend used to keep hers right next to Greenham Common. Can you get a OS map and check out options from your new yard?

Hi, I am a couple of miles west of there. I haven't heard of any great hacking routes in Headley. Below are some areas local to Headley that have good areas suitable for faster work.

Headley[- None that I can see

Kingsclere- If you can find a way on to them the Downs are great.

Greenham & Crookham Common- Yes but there are loose ponies and cattle on Greenham.

North of Chieveley- The Ridgeway which is absolutely amazing.

South of East and West Woodhay- Wayfarer's Walk which has areas suitable for faster work.
