I have a thread in the soapbox about a dog living outside.

What do you think are acceptable conditions for an outside dog? Would you expect a toy dog (yorkie) to live outside?

Thanks!

We have always kept out farm Collies outside but they had a good shed and good coats.

Yorkies are pets so as such why would you want to keep them outside I dont know and are a breed that would struggle to keep warm.

Ah I ve just read the soapbox thread, I suppose if its initial needs are being met which would be the criteria set by the RSPCA then that should be fine according to them.

Why oh why anyone would want a dog like a Yorkie and keep it outside is beyond me, as winter sets in this little dog will suffer and thats supposedly when the RSPCA will get involved.

As Murphys Minder said if they have had one dog taken away already I would have thought the threat of another going the same way would be all the leverage the RSPCA needed to tell these people things have to change for the better.

thaks for the link C

i agree RSPCA probably wont do much unless the have been banned from keeping dogs that is, so till worth a call.

someone reported my dogs living outside last winter (rented house they were not allowed in), dog warden came out a laughed as it was only a four by eight kennel and run, but they were only shut in at night and when no-one was home. it also had a heat lamp in it to keep them warm.

in fact ia ma just re-varnishing it to put it back up at the new house, its great to be able to put the dogs under a heat lamp to dry off before they come in.

so with right housing i think any dog can live out but i think most these days need artificial heat

Thanks all. The only shelter the dog has is one of those plastic garden sheds. No heat, and from the quick look I had this morning, the bedding looks soaked.

We have a big wooden shed. It's much more closed in, but is still freezing inside.

Phone call has been made, so we'll see what happens.

No. If it was a breed that could cope with the outdoors or had adequate heating etc, then yes, no problem.
But in these circumstances, its just cruel.

^^ this. 3 of mine are out, but my kennels are adequate, insulated, draft proof/dry bedding changed every other week and the only dog that would feel the cold has a coat on her.

Well done you for caring about the poor little thing. That type of dog is certainly not suitable for living in those conditions with no proper shelter. btw I'm horrified that one of the other posters actually thinks that a plastic shed is sufficient protection from the cold:eek::eek: I do hope you get some reaction from either the RSPCA or EH, surely if the RSPCA have already taken one dog away they will be round quite quickly to deal with this one. Keep us updated.

Agree with everyone else, the thin and silky nature of a Yorkies coat and their lack of insulation means that a damp unheated uninsulated container is not a suitable kennel!

I hope this dog is given a better and more appropriate care in the future - good luck.
