My mare has started losing hair on the outside of her ears. Only noticed when I was riding and her ears were facing forwards.

Other than that, she has a healthy dappled bay coat with no blemishes.

Yesterday I coated them in baby oil and today I bathed them in hibiscrub (chlorhexidine)

Any ideas?

Vet is coming out in 2 weeks anyway but hoping to get rid before hand as she is meant to be showing in 2 weeks

Has a neck cover been rubbing them when she is grazing
I used to have a PE rug that did this to Ibe of mine. Only really became obvious as his coat changed

Nothing specific to add im afraid but just to let you know our vet came to the yard last week and mentioned that she is seeing a tonne of lice cases at the moment. She said she had never known so many cases and she is recommending deosect. I realise there are probably no signs of lice on your horse but thought it worth mentioning.

I was going to say lice as well.

Two of ours (field kept) have had them (first time ever) and it presented with balding patches at the tops of necks/behind ears.

Had the vet out as I didn't know what it was. Clipped off, Frontline spray, bathed.

I can't remember if the vet said clip, but they were being done anyway.

This may be totally irrelevant to your horse but my mare started to lose the hair on the inside of her ears and on the edges. Some time later she was diagnosed with Cushings Disease and put on Prascend. The hair started to grow back straight after.
