Outside stables or barn?

My lady is moving outside tomorrow :O
She hasn't been in an outside stable for nearly 10 years!
Which do people here prefer? Before she was in an American barn style and just a normal single row barn.

Barn.

I live where it can be either very hot, or very cold, I would never consider anything but a barn whilst I am in this climate, my barn is 10C warmer, or cooler than outside at any given time thank heavens. I love my barn, shabby as it may be. In fact I don't think I have seen a traditional style box for years, certainly not here.

In the UK, with all your rain ... I'd go for a barn everytime given the choice, I like my comforts and getting blown about or rained on when I don't have to is not on that list anymore. :(

Barn for me, so much warmer I think, although I don't like that feeling of being indoors when it comes to making mess! I would feel bad dropping a few shavings whereas I'm not too bothered about the area outside a box!

Barn definitely - you can tie your horse outside while mucking out and it won't get soaked -outdoor ones are fine if you have a really decent sized overhang, but personally I prefer barns.

I would like to have a barn for my own comforts like not having to worry bout my horse getting wet, ice ouside the stable etc but my mare would get really bored looking at the same 3 walls all day/ night. I like her to have a view. That way she sees different things happening throughout the day :)

I guess I'll miss my barn then :/ haha. The overhang is pretty decent, can keep a horse dry tied up outside.
She lives there all the time though and I'm just her human waiter haha so I think outside is what she'd prefer!

I prefer outside, with plenty of fresh air, though wind drives me mad as I like everywhere very tidy. The horse doesn't like stables but settles better in a barn. So he lives out!

This, but if you are thinking about a barn, remember to have viewing openings (windows) at the back, otherwise it is difficult to keep one horse in on its own, when it can't see any of the others.

Outside for me but mostly for my horse, he can see out into the yard, into my kitchen, and everyone who passes down the road :)

My stables are stone built with three foot walls which are very cool in summer and warm in winter

Being rained on doesn't bother me and Ben hasn't melted yet :D

I have a mini barn and all the 4 stables in it have both the inward stable doors and also top door type windows on the outside. Which means they have the best of both worlds. Also it is a portal frame building so the stable partitions arent part of the structure, making it flexible if we ever sold the place to non horsey types and also making it very airy but yet warm.

In really bad weather (we are in Cairngorms!) I occasionally have to close one of the outer windows in mega gales but the horse still has the inward barn one and can chat to her pals and the outer window also has an actual window in it so even when closed it is light and bright.

So it is definitely possible to have the best of both worlds.

I absolutely prefer it to a row of looseboxes. In awful weather, you can do all the jobs and only have to face the weather when you empty the wheelbarrow.

The horses absolutely love it.

Currently I'm spoilt and have both with the intention that the barn should have the stables demolished to be used as my husband's workshop and storage for the vehicles. There are six outdoor stables and six in the barn.

BUT my non-horsey husband has decided that it's so nice to have the horses all in the barn with the lights on in the dark winter's night and be able to put in a door to walk straight from the house into the barn that he might give up converting the barn back to agricultural and keep it for the horses!

I use to be in a barn, which was fine, but very noisy due to the metal doors on runners, and quite messy, the major plus being it was out of the rain. But now my boy is in an outside stable and has been for years, and I love them! They've always had an overhang which shields him from the wind and rain, and its so cosy in there. Plus he gets tied outside which is lovely in the summer, and has lots of fresh air.

Prefer outside: more fresh air and more for my mare to see.

She didn't mind being in a barn at RC camp as the divisions between the boxes were solid wood up to the roof, but she doesn't like it when they are only solid part way up (and bars up to the roof). She spends her whole time pulling faces at the horses in the boxes next to her, and won't settle (her previous owner had found this to be a problem). She likes her personal space!

I keep asking myself this question, we are currently in the process of putting up a portal frame building that was going to be open stables with a large 8 ft overhang (roof and gable end are done so far but we need to put the concrete panels on the lower walls, board the rest and fit the partitions, and we keep changing our mind about whether to board up the front section - it will have a wall panel 1 m high, but I like the idea of being able to see out over the top. I might get a roller shutter that I can pull down in bad weather, Then I can have the best of both!

Barn definitely, more light and air than individual stables. Mine have top doors on the outside wall so they can see out then the stable door on the inside so they can nose as whatever is going on in the barn. Air flows from window to door through the whole stable much better than door and window on the same wall as individual stables have.

A good test of air flow is how may cobwebs you have - we have none so I'm happy the air flow is pretty good. I;ve always found individual stables get loads of cobwebs in the corners if not cleaned out.

In an ideal world I'd prefer outdoor stables with a good overhang. However, in the midst of winter with snow or ice, barns do have their uses!!!! :)

Barn but I like barns with lots of natural light coming through the roof and top doors out of the back wall so on nice days horses can look outside if they want to :)
Outside is just a nightmare in the typical english weather

That ^^ is why I prefer barns, we have had snow on the ground since Christmas - and it is snowing today, the wind is vicious here and I have better things to do than dig my way into stables.

Not that I keep many horses in, my barn is full of these.

Wow Enfys!! Snow!!
And yeah I prefer barns but sadly at our new yard the barns are all grilled, pony stables and she's very food protective and doesn't like horses too much!
So outside she's got her privacy in the stable but can see the whole yard if she wants to look out.

New stable :)
She thinks she's moved yards though...despite only walking across the concrete..

I have just moved my pony to a barn when he has spent his life in outside box. I was a little concerned about how he would settle. He loves it. He is on the end so the sun, what little we have had reaches his face and neck with his head over the door. He can also see out to the horses outside which helps. I think he feels he has died and gone to heaven as he has a mare opposite and one alongside! I like it as once I'm in, I don't have to contend with the elements.

Also more fresh air.
