Maddie, who we lost in February had ovarian cysts.
She'd never been the friendliest mare, and when she began to get grumpier, we just put it down to her getting older and other things.

The cysts were playing havoc with her hormones, and we don't know how long she had them for. Her behaviour could have been due to this for quite a while.

I don't really know what the purpose of this post is, i've just been looking at some photos and this video i made when she was pts

i suppose just to say that, even if your horse is normally grumpy, if their behaviour changes quite a lot, get it checked sooner rather than later, as we didn't know what the cause of her hormone changes were until after she was pts.
Nothing could have been done in Maddie's case but maybe if we'd known sooner, we could have saved her a bit of suffering.

She's in a better place now, no doubt terrorising everyone whereever she is

Don't feel bad, I'm sure you did everything you could for her. There is no way you could have known so don't beat yourself up.

I was rushed in to hospital 6 weeks ago in tremendous pain, discharged twice and finally, after collapsing at the hospital and being re-admitted (for the third time) it took a whole day's worth of poking, prodding and scans to figure out that I have an ovarian cyst that eventually ruptured. My point is that it is sometimes difficult to figure these things out in humans, let alone in animals. I had no idea I had one, but like you have 20:20 retrospect vision and have been adding things up now I know what it is.

You, like me, couldn't have known so don't feel bad, just remember the good times and cherish them.

really sorry to hear your mare was pts. sending you lots of hugs. my mare had her ovaries taken and she is a different horse i think not enough people look at this option.

thankyou muffinino, i know we did the best we could for her but it's still hard.

thanks wildpony, glad to hear your mare is better! Yes, i think it's something that needs to have awareness raised really.

My weird mare is going to the vets tomorrow for investigations into this type of thing. I think we might be cluching at straws once again though, she's not grumpy at all, just odd and miserable about something.
