Hi, I've owned my mare for 6 years! & 6 weeks ago (mid march) my mare suffered colic like symptoms! Pawing the ground, holding her head low, laying flat out with legs stretched out, trying to urinate, passing small amounts of poo, blowing! Vet gave her a rectal, tubed her as a precaution, gave her buscapan and she seemed fine! A couple of weeks ago there was evidence that she may have been cast in her stable during the night! I'm now thinking she may have had a colicky episode again as 6 days ago she has another colicky episode same as the first time - vets said spasmodic colic, gave buscapan, instant relief!
She's turned out during the day & currently stabled at night with hay, only has a light chop & nuts as has been fussy over her feed this winter!
I turned her out this morning and she went straight over to the geldings & was squirting and winking!
I'mscratching my head as to why she's getting these colicky episodes!

The first time she colicked I noticed sand in her poo a few days later so I gave her a course of sand out & put it down to that! When she had it last time (6 days ago) she had moved into the nxt field that has quite a lot of clover on it (It's been grazed all winter but does have a little more on it than the field she's been on all winter - same field but fenced off) wouldn't explain the episode in March & a couple of weeks ago!

Anyone had a mare show these type of symptoms due to ovary pain or ulcers?

Apart from getting a bit stressy/spooky/clingy when in season you can't really tell - she's a sweet natured mare & not marish at all!

She doesn't really show any signs of ulcers either, she's keeps her weight (maybe too well) normal poo, can be a little girthy tho & does have restricted hind leg movement!

Thankyou

Yes - I have one very similar (however a gelding)! He went through a patch of having gas / spasmodic colic regularly due to ulcers. We treated the ulcers and have since managed them better and I haven't had further issues for the last two years. I don't think he necessarily had ulcer symptoms at the time, generally a very good doer. Sometimes would get a little bloated and filled out through his flank. Nothing had changed either during the period he colicked regularly, it was reasonably out of the blue.

We thought our mare had colic one night, she was showing all the signs! Turned out it was a granulosa cell tumour on her ovary! She had it removed by laparoscopy under heavy sedation! she made a really good recovery, started light work after just over a month! She was 21 at the time and hasn't looked back since, she's going better than ever!
