My mare is in for a scan on her ovaries next week. She has been winking all winter and the vet thinks she may have a growth on them causing over production of hormones. They said one option was to take her ovaries out. Has anyone heard of any success with this op? I am worried but my mare is really agressive with other horses so I am thinking this may be the best option.

Yes, my mare had surgery to remove a Granulosa Cell tumour from her right ovary a few years ago. The tumour was the size of a rugby ball so they had to remove the ovary too.

The op was a massive success, my mare was back to her normal self within days (had been aggressive and a bit stallion like prior to surgery).

my old horse had tumours on her overies which caused stallion like behaviour and she became very difficult to handle and ride . Because she was 19 and 16.2 cleveland X cob she was PTS, as the operation was a big risk at her age and her quality of life was not good enough to leave her in the field.
sad really, and i still miss her

sorry, probaly not want you want to hear, but it is a big operation for a horse to recover from. I hope your horse can avoid such an operation.

If you are having a standing ovarectomy then I have seen this done a few times with 75% sucess rate!

One mare out of the 4 carried on with her stallion tendencies after but that maybe a rare case!

All horses were back in work around 8 weeks later and did not leave a scar.

Good luck

my mare had both hers out. standing operation. she is brilliant. if it didnt work she would have been put to sleep. feel free to ask me any questions.....i could go on forever

Yes it is done standing with sedationa and local anaesthetic. The surgeon uses camera and keyhole surgery to remove the ovaries and then the layers of muscle and tissue are stitched up. Horse have about 3 weeks box rest until stitches out and then start work slowly!

3 weeks box rest? dont think so! when mine had hers done they said as they dont do it very often they dont really have much info on the recovery or even the results. mine started on 6 weeks box rest. followed by walking in hand. turnout in a small field. then had her rescanned as something wasnt quite right and the muscle wasnt healing properly. so 4 more weeks box rest.......and the process all over again...she had the operation end may and i didnt sit on her till november. sorry didnt mean to rant
