Brief history - 8 yo mare, tad grumpy in her stable most of the time, gets really cuddly when in season, lovely to ride until in season, just doesn't want to know and will do anything to get you off.
Last July I gave up on all the herbal stuff and put her onto regumate - different horse, still showed mild signs of seasons but other than being a bit sharper she was lovely to ride. Stopped regumate over winter while she was on holiday and started it again late January when she came into season after seeing a gelding! Been going fine, again a bit sharper when in season but not too bad, until the last 2 and she was a nightmare.
Friday we decided to get her scanned so she came off the regumate and came into season last night and got scanned today.
Vet said she has no cysts etc, all looks healthy, but, her ovaries are really big and lots of follicles.
I got her scanned with the view of getting her ovaries removed but if there isn't any cysts etc would I putting her through a procedure for no reason?
Vet and my vet have both said that it could be the time of year and the regumate isn't really helping as much as it does over summer time.
I am now wondering what to do, do I go ahead and get them out. Or, do I keep her on the regumate for another few months and see if she settles down again and just carry on as is and be extra careful (super glue on saddle) come next spring.

Spaying is normally done under standing sedation. it isn't a long procedure and generally there are few complications and the horse can return to work within a week or two.

Would the large ovaries and follicles be due to her coming off the regumate so recently?

Can you leave her off it for a couple of months and then scan again? You may see different results that can help you decide.

I do know someone who had their mares ovaries removed, and she became a real sweetheart, and much easier to deal with.

Get the ovaries out. My bosses horse had similar. In season she was a nightmare. She was in increasing amounts of regumate. She was scanned which showed ovaries were fine and no cysts. However behaviour got worse and she went in to get hen removed. When they went in bith ovaries had multiple cysts and were huge. Vet sure there were causing all sorts of issues and pain for her. She was in hospital for 5 days then home in box rest until stitches out and back in gentle work after 2 weeks and in full work after 4 weeks. She is a totally different horse now. Very very worthwhile.

Thanks for the replies
I got the vet report today
he says
I found the mare to be in early to mid oestrous with marked uterine oedema. Both ovaries were enlarged with multiple follicles, with no obvious dominant follicle yet present. In my opinion her ovaries were over active for the time of year.
